Daughter of Slain Dominican Heroine to Speak in Lawrence

Fifty years after the murder of her mother and aunts, Minou Tavarez Mirabal, a member of the Congress of the Dominican Republic, will reflect on that tragic event and political violence against women at a Tuesday, March 1 presentation as part of the White Fund Lecture Series presented by Northern Essex Community College. Titled “Political Participation in Combating Violence toward Women: A Reflection 50 Years After the Assassination of the Mirabal Sisters”, the presentation is free and open to the public and will begin at 12:30 p.m.at the Lawrence Senior Citizen Center, 155 Haverhill St., Lawrence.

On Dec. 17, 1999, the United Nations General Assembly designated Nov. 25, as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. The designation is in honor of Mirabel’s mother Minerva and her aunts Patria and Maria Teresa Mirabal, Dominican heroines who were assassinated on that date in 1960 during the dictatorship of Rafael Leonidas Trujillo, one of the bloodiest in Latin America.

Tavarez Mirabal will discuss gender and political violence against women in the Dominican Republic as well as globally. She will also present what she considers urgent actions to be implemented in order to help end one of the greatest scourges of humanity today.

The White Fund’s purpose is to have a free series of interactive presentations for Lawrence area adults, youth, and children. The audience is encouraged to seek wisdom, cultural enrichment, and intellectual enhancement by attending and participating.

Funded by a generous financial gift from the Honorable Daniel Appleton White, the White Fund Lecture Series has provided cultural conversation featuring well-known lecturers in fields such as history, literature, travel, the arts, and politics. The White Fund is collaborating with Northern Essex on this series.

NECC Sponsors Annual Peace Poetry Contest

Students in grades kindergarten through 12, both from public and private schools, as well as Northern Essex Community College students, are invited to participate in Northern Essex Community College’s Third Annual Peace Poetry Contest and Reading. Participants may create and submit original poems on the subject of peace.

The deadline for submission is Tuesday, March 15. Some 80 poems and accompanying artwork will be selected for publication in a small book of poetry to be published later in the spring. In addition, selected entrants will be invited to take part in a poetry reading from 6-8:30p.m. on Friday, May 6 in the Technology Center on the Haverhill Campus.

Last year’s contest, the second annual, attracted over 800 entries from more than 44 schools including a poem from a 10 year old boy from Lahore, Pakistan, who wrote about the grim realities of the violence he faces daily as well as his hope for peace.

The contest is coordinated by NECC professor of English Dr. Paul G. Saint-Amand, a Vietnam era veteran who is committed to peace. “As an educator, I want to fuel children’s imaginations toward peace,” he says. “A lot more has been written about war than about peace.”

NECC students are collaborating on the project and have developed a website, designed posters and award certificates, and will host the public reading.

Entries can be submitted to peacepoetry@necc.mass.edu or NECC Peace Poetry Contest, 100 Elliott St., Spurk 317H, Haverhill, MA 01830-2399.

For additional information contact Paul Saint-Amand at 978-556-3307, psaintamand@necc.mass.edu or visit the webpage at https://www.necc.mass.edu/academics/enrichment/service-learning/peace-poetry/

This contest is sponsored by the NECC Office of the Vice President of Academic Affairs, the Division of Humanities and Social Sciences, the English Department, and the Service Learning Committee.

Dr. Lane Glenn will become fourth president of Northern Essex Community College

Dr. Lane Glenn will be the new president of Northern Essex Community College.

At its February 1 meeting, the Massachusetts’ Board of Higher Education voted unanimously to approve Dr. Lane Glenn as the new president of Northern Essex Community College, replacing Dr. David Hartleb, who will retire this coming June.

A resident of Amesbury, Glenn currently serves as vice president of academic affairs at Northern Essex Community College, a position which he has held since 2006. Prior to that, he was dean of academic and student services at Oakland Community College in Michigan. He has also served as director of learning services at Lansing Community College, also in Michigan. Glenn holds a Ph.D. in theater from Michigan State University.

Glenn was selected by the college’s board of trustees which voted unanimously to recommend him to the Massachusetts Board of Higher Education at a December 22 meeting. His selection followed a national search which began last summer, shortly after President Hartleb announced his retirement.

In his four years at the college, Glenn has focused on student success, including increasing support for underprepared students. He has also expanded the college’s relationships with local high schools and partnered with local employers, such as Raytheon, to develop programs that deliver the skills most needed in the job market.

Some examples of successes under his leadership include the college’s new associate of science degree in lab science which was developed in partnership with ten local employers and an innovative Early College Program at Amesbury High School which has been called a statewide model. He also spearheaded the college’s newest facility, NECC Riverwalk, which opened in the fall, bringing together credit programs, adult literacy programs, and noncredit personal enrichment and career programs in one location for the first time.

After the BHE vote, Glenn called Northern Essex “a fantastic place.” “We have tremendously talented faculty and staff, hard-working and dedicated students, and wonderful support from the communities we serve. We have accomplished some important student success and workforce development goals recently, and have some very exciting opportunities ahead of us.”

Massachusetts Commissioner of Higher Education Richard Freeland said “I am looking forward to working with Lane Glenn in the years to come, and deeply appreciate his active involvement in the work to develop the Vision Project, our state’s new public agenda for higher education. Lane has played a pivotal role in our statewide work on learning outcomes assessment, a topic of critical importance these days as we explore the effectiveness of our education programs. He will be a tremendous asset to Northern Essex Community College and also to the larger cause of public higher education in the Commonwealth.”

“I’m thrilled with the choice,” said Joseph Edwards, chairperson of the college’s board of trustees. “Dr. Glenn has the ability and the enthusiasm to make an excellent president and he has insight into what’s happening at the college.”

When he takes office in July, Glenn will be the fourth president of the college, which opened its doors in 1961. Harold Bentley served from 1960 to 1975, John Dimitry from 1975 to 1996, and David Hartleb will have served from 1996 to 2011.
