How does one achieve happiness?

Many people believe that they’ll feel happier as a result of something – such as finding a new job, finishing a project, losing weight, etc. However, psychologists and neurologists are realizing that happiness can be more readily achieved through changing the way in which we think.

Lizzie Linn Casanave, professor of philosophy at Northern Essex Community College, will discuss the science of happiness and provide you with practical tools for achieving this new mindset at Flint Memorial Library, 147 Park St., North Reading, on Thursday Aug. 16 at 7 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

Casanave has been teaching philosophy for over 10 years. She received her BA in Philosophy/Religion and World Perspectives and her MA in Critical and Creative Thinking. She is also the Study Abroad Short Course Coordinator at NECC. She currently teaches Practical Logic, Introduction to Philosophy, Introduction to Ethics and First-Year Seminar. Her curriculum also includes a workshop on “The Science of Happiness” which looks at happiness through the lens of positive psychology.

Her presentation is supported by the NECC Speakers’ Bureau. For more information on NECC’s Speakers’ Bureau, visit the Speakers’ Bureau page, the college website, or contact Ernie Greenslade, director of public relations, at egreenslade@necc.mass.edu or call at 978-556-3862.
