President Glenn honored Dr. Stephen Russell, Professor of History, with this year’s recognition.
“Dr. Russell, you have modeled what it means to integrate diverse perspectives, foster critical thinking, and create spaces where students can engage meaningfully with complex topics. Your colleagues and students alike commend you for creating spaces where differing perspectives are heard, civil discourse is practiced, and students are empowered to ask courageous questions.”

NECC`s Class of 2026 student speaker Maria (Ampa) Cubias Realegeno had us all reaching for tissues. She came to the U.S. from El Salvador as a teenager, diligently studied English, earned a soccer scholarship, put her dreams on hold for her family, tragically lost both her parents, and STILL walked across that stage with her associate degree in Criminal Justice. On her own terms. On her own journey.
"This degree is not just mine. It belongs to my parents, too.
My journey at Northern Essex Community College was not easy...Like many of you, I faced exhaustion, stress, self-doubt, and moments where giving up felt easier than continuing.
But I stayed.
Because deep down, I knew I had a purpose. And NECC became more than a school to me.
It became a home. A place where I felt supported, challenged, inspired, and empowered to grow. My journey at Northern Essex also prepared me mentally, emotionally, and academically for my next chapter."
