Today, September 15th, kicks of Hispanic Heritage Month, and we are taking this opportunity to gather, learn, and have some fun on campus. This heritage month is celebrated mid-September to mid-October to highlight the independence of several countries. September 15 is the day that five Latin American countries (Costa Rica, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Guatemala, and Honduras) celebrate their independence from Spain. Mexico celebrates its independence on September 16 and Chile on September 18. Also, Columbus Day/Indigenous Peoples Day, or Día de la Raza, in mid-October, falls within this 30-day period.
This year`s theme: “UNIDOS, SOMOS MÁS.” “TOGETHER, WE ARE MORE.” 🌎

Meet James Dale Smith, Jr. — NECC’s Center for Adult Education Class of 2026 Valedictorian!
James walked across the stage back in June, but his story is one worth telling again — especially this week. As we celebrate Adult Education and Family Literacy Week, we wanted to spotlight the journey that led him here, and remind our community why programs like the Center for Adult Education matter so much.
James’s road wasn’t easy. Like a lot of us, he’s lived through some hard chapters — including navigating social anxiety and a disability that made even writing feel impossible. For a long time, he put off taking the next step. But when he finally walked through the doors of NECC’s Center for Adult Education for the HiSET program, everything changed.
With encouragement from staff who believed in him before he believed in himself, James found something he calls “magical.” He learned to stop thinking of setbacks as failures and started treating them as a springboard — proof of what he’d learned and where he still needed to grow. He showed up every single day, rain or shine, even coming in when classes were canceled just to make sure his classmates knew. Along the way, he built community one small act at a time — even bringing donuts for his classmates just to learn everyone’s names.
That perseverance is exactly why James stood out as this year’s valedictorian. 🏆
His message for anyone thinking about coming back to school? “This is the best place for a second chance. You’re never too old to try. It knocks you down, but you can always get back up. Anything’s possible.”
Adult education changes lives — James is proof. If you or someone you know has been thinking about earning a HiSET credential or continuing their education, now is the time. 💙💛

Big news, Knights! Psychology major Kisleiny Abreu has been named a 2026/2027 Newman Civic Fellow by Campus Compact — one of the highest honors a student changemaker can receive.
As Community Impact Chair for our SGA and a Phi Theta Kappa member, Kisleiny tackles issues like student poverty and educational persistence with a philosophy rooted in self-awareness and connection. A returning student and mother, she leads with authenticity and creates space for others to be seen and heard.
"Real change starts within," she says— and she`s proving it every day on our campus and in our community.
We couldn`t be more proud to call her a Knight 💫
