Severino and his sister, Ashley, met the NECC faculty and gave them a tour.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_28122\" style=\"width: 309px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/necc.edu\/newsroom2\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2026\/02\/AnthonyInDR.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-28122\" class=\" wp-image-28122\" src=\"http:\/\/necc.edu\/newsroom2\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2026\/02\/AnthonyInDR.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"299\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-28122\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Anthony and Ashley Severino with NECC Professor Doris Buckley at their high school in the Dominican Republic.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Severino had no way of knowing that just a few years later, he\u2019d graduate from NECC with a <a href=\"https:\/\/necc.edu\/academics\/credit-programs\/business\/business-transfer\/\">business transfer degree<\/a>, be honored by the <a href=\"https:\/\/necc.edu\/student-life\/honor-societies\/alpha-beta-gamma\/\">NECC Business Honor Society<\/a>, and be one of the recipients of a <a href=\"https:\/\/necc.edu\/newsroom\/2023\/10\/19\/two-northern-essex-students-receive-state-educators-scholarship-2\/\">highly selective state educators\u2019 scholarship<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s really surreal,\u201d Severino said of the incredible, full-circle moment.<\/p>\n<p>After spending the first 11 years of his life in Brooklyn, Severino and his family relocated to his parents\u2019 native Dominican Republic. When he and his sister had the chance to move back to the United States\u2014without their parents\u2014in 2022, they took the opportunity, even though they knew it would be a tough transition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a make-or-break decision,\u201d he said. \u201cThat was the hardest thing, knowing we would not live with our parents anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But Severino took the leap, moving to Lawrence, enrolling at NECC, and getting a part-time job.<\/p>\n<p>It wasn\u2019t easy, though.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI remember feeling the sense of loneliness and feeling isolated,\u201d he said. \u201cWhen I moved here, I did not know one single person. I had actually never even been to Lawrence before I moved here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That wasn\u2019t the only road bump that Severino faced. He tried taking on a full-time job, but balancing work and full-time school hurt his academics, and he ended up failing one of his classes.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_28124\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/necc.edu\/newsroom2\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2026\/02\/IMG_9841.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-28124\" class=\" wp-image-28124\" src=\"http:\/\/necc.edu\/newsroom2\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2026\/02\/IMG_9841.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"472\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-28124\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Severino poses with his NECC diploma at Commencement<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cMe failing that class was a real eye-opener,\u201d he said. He realized that school needed to be his main priority and decided \u201cto give all my undivided attention to Northern Essex.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s exactly what he did. Now, he plans to transfer to a four-year program at UMass Lowell, where he will study business administration.<\/p>\n<p>He also credits the <a href=\"https:\/\/necc.edu\/academics\/academic-support-services\/pace\/\">PACE program<\/a> with helping him every step of the way. PACE stands for Pathways to Academic &amp; Career Excellence Program.
