At the June meeting, that included Winnie, the college\u2019s comfort dog-in-training. Winnie, along with her new, two-legged colleagues received a package of NECC-themed goodies and a brief introduction to the Board and how it operates.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_28256\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/necc.edu\/newsroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/06\/WinnieBoard-scaled.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-28256\" class=\" wp-image-28256\" src=\"http:\/\/necc.edu\/newsroom2\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2026\/02\/WinnieBoard-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"284\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-28256\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Winnie graciously accepts her new employee gifts.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>New Trustees Welcomed\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\nThough Winnie is a tough act to follow, the meeting also included a formal introduction of the Board\u2019s newest members: Age-Span CEO Joan Hatem-Roy and former Essex County Sheriff Frank Cousins, Jr. Both have been involved with the college for many years. Cousins is an alumnus and previously served on the NECC Foundation Board. Hatem-Roy taught evening classes and has partnered with the college on various initiatives in her time at AgeSpan.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Commonwealth Honors Program\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\nAssistant Provost, Academic &amp; Student Affairs Sharon McDermot and Professor of English &amp; <a href=\"https:\/\/necc.edu\/academics\/commonwealth-honors-program\/\">Commonwealth Honors Program Coordinator<\/a> Ginger Hurajt updated the Board on the efforts to grow the program at NECC. This fall, the college is offering\u00a011 honors courses across the Lawrence and Haverhill Campuses. That\u2019s more than double the offerings just two years ago.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It\u2019s been really exciting to see this expansion and offer students on both campuses the opportunity to take honors classes,\u201d shared McDermot.<\/p>\n<p>This fall semester there will also be an honors lounge on the Lawrence Campus for students to connect and work on projects together.<\/p>\n<p>Any student can register and take honors classes regardless of GPA. However, students who take three honors classes and maintain a GPA of at least 3.2 will be designated as members of the\u00a0Commonwealth Honors Program (CHP). That means if they transfer to a state university, they\u2019re automatically enrolled in the Commonwealth Honors program there, and their honors courses transfer easily.<\/p>\n<p>A committee from the CHP recently visited NECC to review its program. They were impressed with their findings and renewed the program\u2019s accreditation through 2031.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey consider the honors program to be a vibrant part of the campus community,\u201d said McDermot.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Not Goodbye, See You Soon\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\nThis meeting marked the last for NECC\u2019s Cheryl Goodwin. Goodwin has worked in the President\u2019s Office for 15 years \u2013 but has been a part of the NECC community in various capacities for 40 years. Goodwin plans to retire in January 2025 and is passing the baton to President Glenn\u2019s new Chief of Staff <a href=\"https:\/\/necc.edu\/newsroom\/2024\/01\/23\/chris-sicuranza-joins-necc-presidents-office\/\">Chris Sicuranza<\/a>. Sicuranza will take over Goodwin\u2019s duties related to the Board of Trustees when they resume meeting in the fall.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want to say to you that you are one amazing person- you have been the utmost professional, you are always there for every one of the trustees &#8211; you are highly invested in the school,\u00a0and it shows,\u201d said NECC Board Chairwoman Jennifer Borislow. \u201cWe all adore and love you and are super excited for your next chapter.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Haverhill, MA (June 5, 2024) \u2013 Each meeting of the Northern Essex Community College Board of Trustees typically starts with the introduction of new employees.
