This national honor recognizes outstanding faculty and staff at the country\u2019s community colleges. Of five NECC nominees, two awardees were selected.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_26300\" style=\"width: 350px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/necc.edu\/newsroom2\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2026\/02\/NISOdWinners_Edit1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-26300\" class=\"wp-image-26300\" src=\"http:\/\/necc.edu\/newsroom2\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2026\/02\/NISOdWinners_Edit1.jpg\" alt=\"five people pose in front of wall, two hold paper awards\" width=\"340\" height=\"240\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-26300\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">NECC Provost Paul Beaudin, Assistant Dean of Library Services Mike Hearn, NISOD winner Laura Mondt, Interim Dean of Health Services Kathy Welch-Hudson, NISOD winner Susan Fichera<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Laura Mondt started at Northern Essex in 2015 as a research librarian. By 2019, she was the coordinator of <a href=\"https:\/\/necc.edu\/library\/\">library services<\/a> in Haverhill. Assistant Dean of Library Services Mike Hearn says he nominated Mondt for her dedication to students, faculty, and promoting literacy. \u201cShe\u2019s a team leader in the library and a strong advocate for student success,\u201d said Hearn. \u201cWorking closely with faculty, she raises the level of student engagement with information resources.\u201d Mondt has also been integral in developing the library\u2019s digital archives and making the content publicly available and searchable. You can peruse the archives <a href=\"https:\/\/necc.access.preservica.com\/\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Susan Fichera, was nominated for her NISOD award by Interim Dean of Health Services Kathy Welch-Hudson. She says one of the things that makes Fichera stand out as a <a href=\"https:\/\/necc.edu\/learn\/credit-programs\/health\/nursing-associate-degree\/\">nursing<\/a> professor is her empathy for her students. \u201cSusan has gone down the path that many of our students have gone down: starting as an LPN, getting her nursing degree and her master\u2019s degree, and finally becoming a certified family nurse practitioner,\u201d she says. \u201cIf Susan has taught you, you are now part of her nursing family. She stays in contact with you. You go around to nursing homes and hospitals, and you\u2019ll meet \u2018Susan grads\u2019.\u201d Fichera was a key part of the team that helped the NECC LPN program become ranked the <a href=\"https:\/\/necc.edu\/newsroom\/2018\/04\/11\/neccs-lpn-program-is-top-in-the-state\/\">best in the state<\/a> by PracticalNursing.org in the \u201817\/18 school year. Welch-Hudson also noted how Fichera incorporates assessment and outcomes in her coursework and her dedication to continuing education.<\/p>\n<p>Since 1978, NISOD has been dedicated to the professional development of faculty, administrators, and staff, and to the continued improvement of teaching and learning, with the ultimate goal of student success. NISOD\u2019s Excellence Awards recognize college employees each year who have demonstrated an outstanding commitment and contribution to students and colleagues.
