The selective honor, granted annually to one graduating NECC student who has demonstrated an exceptional commitment to academic success and community service, was announced during the college\u2019s 61st commencement.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_26725\" style=\"width: 359px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pubsitetest.necc.edu\/newsroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/05\/161-1179.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-26725\" class=\" wp-image-26725\" src=\"https:\/\/pubsitetest.necc.edu\/newsroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/05\/161-1179-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"349\" height=\"233\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-26725\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">NECC Trustee and President of the Alumni Board Jouel Gomez presented Franziska Hoene with the Outstanding Student Award<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Throughout her time on campus, Hoene has served in a variety of key leadership roles that have helped to elevate the student life experience at NECC. In the spring of 2021, she became the president of the <a href=\"https:\/\/necc.edu\/experience\/student-government-association\/\">Student Government Association (SGA)<\/a>, through which she has initiated a range of advocacy efforts on behalf of her peers, in addition to organizing the bi-annual SGA Golden Lamp Awards for exceptional faculty and staff. She is also a member of the Art Club, <a href=\"https:\/\/necc.edu\/experience\/honor-societies\/ptk\/\">Phi Theta Kappa<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/necc.edu\/experience\/student-activities\/civic-engagement\/civic-scholars-program\/\">Civic Scholars<\/a> program, the <a href=\"https:\/\/necc.edu\/learn\/commonwealth-honors-program\/\">Commonwealth Honors<\/a> program, the <a href=\"https:\/\/necc.edu\/experience\/honor-societies\/\">National Society of Leadership and Success<\/a>, and the student advisory council, among other campus committees and organizations.<\/p>\n<p>Outside of campus, her influence is just as far-ranging. A strong proponent of community service work, Hoene regularly steps up to volunteer at her local library, organize park cleanups, and referee for soccer and futsal groups, often assisting in regional and national tournaments.<\/p>\n<p>On winning the Outstanding Student Award, Hoene was quick to express her gratitude:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis means a lot to me. Words cannot describe how grateful I am to be appreciated by the college and key people\u2026 This award shows me that people care about my success and contributions to this college.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She was nominated for the award by Suzanne Reyes, interim coordinator of student activities, who noted Hoene\u2019s dedication and work ethic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFranzi [went] from a homeschool environment to making strides in her academics here at NECC and UML,\u201d she says. \u201cShe is very hard-working and driven in her classes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hoene, who began studying at NECC when she was just 12 years old, has long had high aspirations for her educational career. By the time she reached seventh grade, she had already passed a college entrance exam for math. Now, at 16, she holds an <a href=\"https:\/\/necc.edu\/learn\/credit-programs\/technology-and-engineering\/engineering\/\">associate degree in engineering science<\/a> and is already dual enrolled at UMass Lowell, where she will continue to work toward a bachelor\u2019s degree in biomedical engineering this fall.
