{"id":23861,"date":"2021-10-12T17:24:03","date_gmt":"2021-10-12T21:24:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/necc.edu\/newsroom2\/2021\/10\/12\/necc-announces-plans-for-spring-semester\/"},"modified":"2026-05-13T15:23:34","modified_gmt":"2026-05-13T19:23:34","slug":"necc-announces-plans-for-spring-semester","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/necc.edu\/newsroom\/2021\/10\/12\/necc-announces-plans-for-spring-semester\/","title":{"rendered":"NECC Announces Plans for Spring Semester"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/media-old\/2021\/10\/spring-campus.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-24494 size-medium\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/media-old\/2021\/10\/spring-campus-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a>Haverhill and Lawrence, MA (Oct. 13, 2021) Northern Essex Community College will be significantly increasing the number of courses with an on-campus component in the spring semester, which begins January 19.<\/p>\n<p>In the spring, almost 75% of classes will have an on-campus component, either taught fully online; in a hybrid format which combines online and face-to-face meetings; or online with on-campus labs. This fall, 25% of courses had an on-campus component, up from 10% in the fall of 2020 and spring of 2021.<\/p>\n<p>One quarter of spring 2022 classes will continue to be delivered fully online in an asynchronous format which increases student accessibility.<\/p>\n<p>In making this announcement, Paul Beaudin, Northern Essex\u2019s vice president of academic affairs, said \u201cRemote instruction continues to exacerbate the enrollment challenges of America\u2019s community colleges. The academic needs of many of our students require more face-to-face instruction. Greater physical presence on campus is key to the wider work of community building and student support.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.necc.mass.edu\/newsroom\/2021\/09\/28\/massachusetts-community-colleges-announce-vaccine-requirement\/\">the presidents of the Massachusetts community colleges announced<\/a> that students, faculty, and staff at the commonwealth\u2019s 15 community colleges must be fully vaccinated by January of 2022. Students who are registering for online courses that do not include any in-person component will be exempted from the vaccine requirement.<\/p>\n<p>The college will continue to offer a rich selection of online options. In response to the pandemic, the college\u2019s Center for Instructional Technology helped faculty transition 300 courses to online delivery. The college now offers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.necc.mass.edu\/learn\/online-programs-courses\/online-degree-certificate-programs\/\">11 programs that are 80% online<\/a> as well as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.necc.mass.edu\/learn\/innovative-programs\/100-percent-online-degrees\/\">three new fully online programs<\/a> in Business Transfer, Criminal Justice, and General Studies: Health Specialization.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile the return to campus was important to us, we wanted to offer robust online options to provide accessibility for students, some flexibility for our faculty, and decreased campus density,\u201d said Beaudin.<\/p>\n<p>College administration will be carefully monitoring public health conditions and will respond quickly and appropriately to adapt spring plans to meet those changes if needed.<\/p>\n<p>Registration for the spring semester begins Monday, Nov. 1.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s where you can learn more about the college\u2019s\u00a0over\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.necc.mass.edu\/learn\/credit-programs\/\">60 academic programs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s where you can find out about the college\u2019s many\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.necc.mass.edu\/apply\/information-sessions-tours\/\">virtual and in-person admissions events<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>For additional information on enrolling this spring, contact Enrollment Services, 978 556-3700 or\u00a0admissions@necc.mass.edu<\/p>\n<p>If you are a current student, please visit the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.necc.mass.edu\/current-students\/academic-centers\/\">Academic Center<\/a>\u00a0assigned to your program.
