{"id":26590,"date":"2020-01-23T15:52:35","date_gmt":"2020-01-23T20:52:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/necc.edu\/newsroom2\/2020\/01\/23\/governor-baker-recognizes-necc-students-during-address\/"},"modified":"2026-04-07T09:46:42","modified_gmt":"2026-04-07T13:46:42","slug":"governor-baker-recognizes-necc-students-during-address","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/necc.edu\/newsroom\/2020\/01\/23\/governor-baker-recognizes-necc-students-during-address\/","title":{"rendered":"Governor Baker Recognizes NECC Students During Address"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_22114\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/media-old\/2020\/01\/Jeff-Riley-with-NECC-Student-sitting.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-22114\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-22114\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/media-old\/2020\/01\/Jeff-Riley-with-NECC-Student-sitting-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"NECC Early College students sit in the State House visitors' gallery.\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-22114\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A contingent representing NECC attended the State of the Commonwealth speech this week.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Five <a href=\"http:\/\/www.necc.mass.edu\">Northern Essex Community College<\/a> Promise Program students attended Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker\u2019s State of the Commonwealth address Tuesday night at the Massachusetts State House.<\/p>\n<p>The group broke into smiles when the Governor introduced them during his remarks.\u00a0 Talking about education reform, Baker highlighted successful initiatives such as \u201cgifted and talented programs, acceleration academies, parental outreach, applied learning opportunities, longer school days, and early college programs\u201d that have \u201chelped students find their footing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Speaking of Lawrence&#8217;s Early College partnerships, Baker said \u201cDozens earned full scholarships at area colleges.\u00a0 Joining us today are 11 of them, 6 from Merrimack College and 5 from Northern Essex Community College.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The students attended the annual event, which was televised, and were seated in the visitors\u2019 gallery with Massachusetts State Education Commissioner Jeff Riley, Lawrence Mayor Dan Rivera, and Lawrence Superintendent of Schools Cynthia Paris.<\/p>\n<p>The Lawrence High School (LHS) alumni participated in NECC\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.necc.mass.edu\/learn\/early-college\/\">Early College Program<\/a> while attending LHS. They are all now enrolled at NECC under the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.necc.mass.edu\/newsroom\/2019\/06\/05\/cummings-foundation-funds-promise-program-participants\/\">Promise Program<\/a>, which supports Early College students who attend NECC after graduating from high school to pursue a degree or certificate.<\/p>\n<p>The NECC students were Kirmy Ramos \u2013 Computer Information Sciences:Transfer Option, Tayraingely Santiago \u2013 criminal justice, Alex Suarez \u2013 medical assisting, Estebanya Gonzalez \u2013 general studies art &amp; design, and Tehanny Lemma \u2013 general studies individualized option.<\/p>\n<p>Baker encouraged them to stand and be recognized. He congratulated them on their achievements and wished them the best on continuing their education.
