{"id":26643,"date":"2020-03-03T17:44:32","date_gmt":"2020-03-03T22:44:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/necc.edu\/newsroom2\/2020\/03\/03\/necc-sponsors-12th-annual-peace-poetry-contest\/"},"modified":"2026-04-07T09:47:37","modified_gmt":"2026-04-07T13:47:37","slug":"necc-sponsors-12th-annual-peace-poetry-contest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/necc.edu\/newsroom\/2020\/03\/03\/necc-sponsors-12th-annual-peace-poetry-contest\/","title":{"rendered":"NECC Sponsors 12th Annual Peace Poetry Contest"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/media-old\/2020\/03\/peace-poetry.pdf\"><\/a><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/media-old\/2020\/03\/PeacePoster2019-20-002.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-22328\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/media-old\/2020\/03\/PeacePoster2019-20-002-663x1024.jpg\" alt=\"12th Annual Peace Poetry Poster\" width=\"388\" height=\"600\" \/><\/a><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/media-old\/2020\/03\/peace-poetry.pdf\"><\/a>Original poetry promoting an understanding of peace is being sought for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.necc.mass.edu\">Northern Essex Community College<\/a>\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.necc.mass.edu\/experience\/student-activities\/civic-engagement\/peace-poetry-contest\/\">12th Annual Peace Poetry Contest and Reading.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Students from K-12 classrooms (both public and private) and those adults affiliated with these schools are invited to create and submit original poems on the subject of peace.<\/p>\n<p>Twelve years ago, when, now retired, NECC English Professor Paul Saint-Amand introduced the contest to the community, he had hopes of a \u201cgood response.\u201d Since then, more than 10,000 poems and nearly 1,000 works of art, focusing on peace, have been submitted. Since his retirement, the contest is now coordinated by NECC English Professor Elle Yarborough.<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s contest deadline is Friday, March 13, 2020, by 5 p.m. The reading event for winning submissions will be held Friday, May 1, 2020 from 6 to 8 pm. in the Hartleb Technology Center on the Haverhill Campus, 100 Elliott St. First place winners in each age division will be invited to read their poems. All submissions will be published in a poetry chap book.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTaking over as coordinator for the Peace Poetry Contest has been an incredible honor,\u201d said Yarborough. \u201cLast year was my first year in this role and it was the first time that I read all of the\u00a0poems submitted&#8211;almost 1,000 of them last year and I read every single one.\u00a0 Reading each of these poems was exceptionally uplifting; what an incredible experience it is to read these poems when they are submitted and then, in May, to listen to the students read their work.\u00a0 The poems and the artwork give me so much hope for the future and I know that the members of the audience felt the same way.\u00a0 My hope is that, this year, even more writers will participate and share their writing and their hopes for our future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Peace Poetry Contest &amp; Reading is a program offered under the Service Learning umbrella at NECC.
