NECC<\/a> graphic design alumnus Matt Incontri, who used his drawing skills as a \u201cparty trick,\u201d and illustrated Tina Fey for Saturday Night Live, achieved his dream of becoming an animator.<\/p>\n

The 2009 Amesbury High School graduate said he applied to colleges without a portfolio because while he loved drawing he never really took it seriously. Yet deep down knew he wanted to be an animator.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was always attracted to movies and animated films, I was drawn to moving pictures,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

When he applied to colleges, people asked him what he wanted to do with his life. His answer always went back to the one thing he knew he was truly passionate about – animation.<\/p>\n

The one college he applied to and was accepted, he said, was too pricey.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo I decided to go to NECC to build my portfolio,\u201d he said. NECC didn\u2019t have an animation program. The closest major\u00a0 was graphic design<\/a>. He soon settled into that program even though he wanted to be animating and drawing cartoons.<\/p>\n

\u201cLooking back, going to NECC and pursuing graphic design was one of the best things I\u2019d ever done because it helps me on a day to day basis with my job, and it gave me basic knowledge that I can always fall back onto.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cGraphic design is so marketable as a trade, it\u2019s so versatile and it\u2019s what has gotten me the most amount of work,\u201d he said. \u201cAt the time I wasn\u2019t really sure how graphic design was going to translate into work, but the more I got into it, the more it sparked an interest in me.\u201d<\/p>\n

After enrolling at NECC,\u00a0Incontri\u00a0realized he could earn credits and transfer them to a four-year school. Incontri said NECC is affordable which means less pressure and students can explore different courses until something sticks.<\/p>\n

When Incontri started at NECC, his end goal was to transfer to a four-year school and then begin a career in animation. When he looked at schools, he knew that financially a local state school made sense.<\/p>\n

He applied to Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) and Massachusetts College of Art &\u00a0Design (MassArt). NECC professors wrote his letters of recommendation. \u201cI always recommend building relationships with your professors,\u201d said Incontri.<\/p>\n

Incontri took classes with both Marc Mannheimer and Brian Martin.\u00a0\u201cIf you showed up with your work late, (Mannheimer) would call you out. I genuinely needed that. I needed someone to hold me accountable,\u201d said Incontri.<\/p>\n

\u201c(Incontri) was one of the hardest workers and he had a great attitude that resonated in class. He also turned out some incredible work, a lot of which I still show students as an example!,\u201d wrote Martin.<\/p>\n

He attended MassArt and all his general education credits transferred with ease so when he started at MassArt he was taking almost exclusively art classes.<\/p>\n

Many of the MassArt faculty also taught at RISD. He joked that he received a private school education at a public college.<\/p>\n

One professor, became a friend and a mentor. When Incontri sent him his resume, the professor offered him an interview at PTC, the tech company, where he was working. Incontri was hired as an animator\/illustrator and that professor became his boss.<\/p>\n

\u201cI worked for that company for three years and he was still my boss,\u201d said Incontri.<\/p>\n

His advice for aspiring inimators?\u00a0\u201cAlways, always work. Whether you\u2019re working for a company or you\u2019re just pursuing personal work, that work will always lead to more opportunities.\u201d<\/p>\n

When Incontri learned a coworker was releasing a children\u2019s book, he decided, to animate one of its characters. He spent a couple weeks producing a clip of the character playing the ukulele. He shared with his coworker, who in turn shared with a friend, who worked at SNL. When SNL needed some animation work they contacted Incontri.<\/p>\n

\u201cJust a silly quick social media animation led to me designing and animating a commercial for SNL that was used to promote Tina Fey\u2019s reappearance on the show as a host.<\/p>\n

Currently, Incontri works for Hot House Productions as a storyboard revisionist on the second season of the Adult Swim series “Mama Named me Sheriff.”<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cPursue what you\u2019re interested in,” he said. “Your passion will always shine through, and if you enjoy it other people will enjoy it too.\u201d<\/p>\n
