{"id":26957,"date":"2020-11-30T20:57:00","date_gmt":"2020-12-01T01:57:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/necc.edu\/newsroom2\/2020\/12\/01\/thin-woman\/"},"modified":"2026-04-07T09:53:43","modified_gmt":"2026-04-07T13:53:43","slug":"thin-woman","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/necc.edu\/newsroom\/2020\/11\/30\/thin-woman\/","title":{"rendered":"\u201cThe Thin Woman\u201d Exhibit Explores Eating Disorders"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_23519\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/media-old\/2020\/11\/The-Thin-Woman.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-23519\" class=\"wp-image-23519 size-medium\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/media-old\/2020\/11\/The-Thin-Woman-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Woman in bed with her head down and a blanket covering her knees and legs.\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-23519\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">&#8220;The Thin Woman&#8221;, an exhibit now available virtually through the NECC Linda Hummel-Shea ArtSpace<\/p><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mcclump3.wixsite.com\/website-1\">\u201cThe Thin Woman\u201d<\/a>, the latest exhibit from The Linda Hummel-Shea ArtSpace at Northern Essex Community College, draws attention to eating disorders, illustrating, through black and white photos and poems, the personal struggles of one woman.<\/p>\n<p>The exhibit is offered online only through December 15.<\/p>\n<p>The poems were written by Michelle Howard of Amesbury and inspired by her sister \u201cMelissa\u201d who has struggled with an eating disorder for 30-plus years.<\/p>\n<p>After writing the poems, Howard reached out to her cousin Charlene Yelle, a Newburyport photographer, and asked her to create a companion photograph for each of the eight poems.<\/p>\n<p>Gallery Director Marc Mannheimer and Howard began talking about the \u201cThe Thin Woman\u201d project two years ago, well before the pandemic was an issue. Since the college is drastically limiting visits to campus, a decision was made over the last few months to transition to an online format.<\/p>\n<p>Howard said the project has already led to healing discussions within her own family and she is hoping that the exhibit will reach a broader audience.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve always felt helpless,\u201d she said. \u201cI wanted to gain insight, help her express to other people what she is going through.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Here is the link to the exhibit <a href=\"https:\/\/mcclump3.wixsite.com\/website-1\">https:\/\/mcclump3.wixsite.com\/website-1<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Located in the Bentley Library Building on NECC\u2019s Haverhill Campus, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.necc.mass.edu\/engage\/community-resources\/library-artspace-gallery\/\">Linda Hummel-Shea ArtSpace Gallery<\/a> features exhibits by NECC students, faculty, and artists from around the region and the world.<\/p>\n<p>Northern Essex\u2019s Department of Art &amp; Design offers many courses in fine art and design leading to an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.necc.mass.edu\/learn\/credit-programs\/art\/general-studies-art\/\">Associate Degree in General Studies: Art &amp; Design<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>For additional information, contact Marc Mannheimer, gallery coordinator at\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:mmannheimer@necc.mass.edu\">mmannheimer@necc.mass.edu<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Northern Essex Community College has campuses in both Haverhill and Lawrence.
