{"id":27040,"date":"2019-01-23T19:18:46","date_gmt":"2019-01-24T00:18:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/necc.edu\/newsroom2\/2019\/01\/24\/neccs-hidy-receives-mention-in-book-on-udl\/"},"modified":"2026-05-14T14:10:31","modified_gmt":"2026-05-14T18:10:31","slug":"neccs-hidy-receives-mention-in-book-on-udl","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/necc.edu\/newsroom\/2019\/01\/23\/neccs-hidy-receives-mention-in-book-on-udl\/","title":{"rendered":"NECC\u2019s Hidy Receives Mention in Book on UDL\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/media-old\/2019\/01\/HidySection3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-19603\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/media-old\/2019\/01\/HidySection3-300x265.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"265\" \/><\/a>Renowned graphic designer and former <a href=\"https:\/\/www.necc.mass.edu\">Northern Essex Community College<\/a> Professor Lance Hidy, who is now the college\u2019s accessible media specialist, recently received a\u00a0mention in a new book that discusses Universal Design for Learning (UDL).<\/p>\n<p>The book, \u201cReach Everyone, Teach Everyone: Universal Design for Learning in Higher Education,\u201d was written by Thomas Tobin and Kirsten Behling and published by the West Virginia University Press.\u00a0In many years as a UDL consultant to NECC, Behling formed alliances with NECC staff and faculty, and, early on, was instrumental in attracting Hidy\u2019s interest in this branch of design. The book explains that while UDL is often associated with students with disabilities, it actually benefits a much\u00a0broader population.<\/p>\n<p>For example, while captioned instructions can assist the\u00a0hard of hearing\u00a0they may also be beneficial to a student needing to keep the volume low to avoid waking others or for someone studying on a noisy team bus. Hidy and his experience with UDL is given as an illustration of a positive UDL experience in the book.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_19606\" style=\"width: 198px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/media-old\/2019\/01\/13425202205_5096d2eccf_o.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19606\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-19606\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/media-old\/2019\/01\/13425202205_5096d2eccf_o-188x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"188\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-19606\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lance Hidy<\/p><\/div>\n<p>When Hidy, then a professor of art &amp; design, learned he would have a student in his Photoshop course who required course materials in 16-point type, Hidy put his design skills to work. He redesigned the handout with 16-point type, added 20 new illustrations, and included screen captures. Even though he designed it with one student in mind, Hidy distributed the revised material to everyone in the course. He had a \u201cUDL awakening\u201d when the\u00a0entire class\u00a0completed the assignments in two weeks in what once took three weeks.<\/p>\n<p>This set Hidy on a quest that aligned with his expertise, the authors noted. \u201cA graphic artist by trade, he understood the value of multiple modes of expression and quickly became a UDL advocate,\u201d the authors wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Hidy also sits on the NECC\u00a0accessible media committee,\u00a0along with colleagues from the Center for Instructional Technology, The Learning Accommodations Center\/Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services, NECC Libraries, Marketing, and Faculty.\u00a0The mission of the committee is to raise design awareness on campus, to enhance fundamental academic principles of equity and accessibility by striving to provide to the broadest possible audience, regardless of impairment or disability, equal access to the college\u2019s programs, services, events, and activities.
