{"id":27104,"date":"2019-02-28T15:55:02","date_gmt":"2019-02-28T20:55:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/necc.edu\/newsroom2\/2019\/02\/28\/february-2019-trustee-update\/"},"modified":"2026-05-14T14:11:46","modified_gmt":"2026-05-14T18:11:46","slug":"february-2019-trustee-update","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/necc.edu\/newsroom\/2019\/02\/28\/february-2019-trustee-update\/","title":{"rendered":"February 2019 Trustee Update"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dr. Carolyn Knoepfler wants trustees to know that STEM programs are thriving at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.necc.mass.edu\">Northern Essex<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Knoepfler, who is the assistant dean of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) gave the educational report at the February meeting, sharing what\u2019s been happening in her newly formed division.<\/p>\n<p>The STEM area is a team of 92 people including part time faculty and full time faculty, two lab technicians, and an administrative assistant. Programs housed under this umbrella include\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.necc.mass.edu\/learn\/credit-programs\/science\/\">science<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.necc.mass.edu\/learn\/credit-programs\/computer-information-science\/\">computer information science<\/a>;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.necc.mass.edu\/learn\/credit-programs\/technology-and-engineering\/\">engineering<\/a>; and math.<\/p>\n<p>With the help of grants from the US Department of Labor\u2019s Guided Pathways to Success in STEM (GPSTEM), the Department of Higher Education\u2019s\u00a0STEM Starter Academy, the Amelia Peabody Foundation, National Grid, and the Women\u2019s Fund of Essex County, the STEM area has introduced some exciting new initiatives in recent years, according to Knoepfler.<\/p>\n<p>Those initiatives have included the STEM Starter Academy, which offers boot camps, summer academies, scholarships, technical support and tutoring, all designed to help attract students to STEM fields and give them the tools to be successful once they are here.<\/p>\n<p>They have also funded a STEM Speaker Series, bringing well-known speakers such as Sy Montgomery, a naturalist and writer, and Will Broussard from the Mount Washington Observatory to campus to share different STEM perspectives.<\/p>\n<p>Knoepfler seems most excited about the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.necc.mass.edu\/current-students\/academic-centers\/center-for-stem\/\">STEM Academic Center<\/a>, which opened to students last fall.\u00a0 Located in Room 219 in the Hartleb Technology Center, the center provides a comfortable, supportive space for STEM students to connect with other students and faculty and staff.\u00a0 Every day from 11 am to 4 pm, the center hosts a \u201ccalculus party\u201d says Knoepfler, where students meet to study calculus.<\/p>\n<p>To learn more about STEM programs at Northern Essex, visit the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.necc.mass.edu\/learn\/innovative-programs\/stem-programs\/\">website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Report from the Administration<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Accreditation and a New Strategic Plan on the Horizon<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Every 10 years, the college\u2019s accreditation agency, New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE), formerly NEASC, requires the college go through an intensive evaluation process, which includes a comprehensive self-study and a site visit by NECHE.\u00a0 Northern Essex\u2019s accreditation is due for renewal in the fall of 2020.<\/p>\n<p>The college is working on the self-study now, and feedback from students, faculty, and staff is being solicited through\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/facstaff.necc.mass.edu\/vision-and-planning-initiatives\/neche-soar-forums\/\">campus forums<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/facstaff.necc.mass.edu\/vision-and-planning-initiatives\/neche-soar-forums\/\">online forms<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The process will culminate with a site visit from NECHE in the fall of 2020, which will also be the beginning of the college\u2019s next strategic plan.\u00a0 \u201cThe results of our self study will lead us into the strategic plan,\u201d said Glenn.<\/p>\n<h3>Hospitality &amp; Culinary Arts Center in Downtown Haverhill Scheduled to Open in 2019<\/h3>\n<p>Construction of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.necc.mass.edu\/newsroom\/2018\/12\/20\/lupoli\/\">Lupoli Family School of Hospitality &amp; Culinary Arts<\/a>\u00a0is moving along, and the college is in the process of hiring a project manager to oversee the project.\u00a0\u00a0 The building will open this fall.<\/p>\n<h3>President Glenn Meets with Governor\u2019s Staff to Discuss Regional Public Safety Center in Lawrence<\/h3>\n<p>President Glenn and NECC Vice President of Administration and Finance Mike McCarthy met recently with members of the governor\u2019s staff to discuss a proposed regional public safety center in Lawrence.<\/p>\n<p>A potential partnership between the city of Lawrence and the college, the center has been under discussion for five years.\u00a0 Glenn told trustees that it may be a \u201cdecade-long project\u201d.\u00a0 \u201cI do feel like we\u2019re getting some traction this time,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<h3>Three Sabbaticals are Approved<\/h3>\n<p>Trustees unanimously approved three sabbatical leaves that were recommended by President Lane Glenn.<\/p>\n<p>Diana Mele, Deaf Studies\/Human Services professor, will explore how the college can address a critical need for American sign language interpreters who are prepared to work in clinical mental health settings during the fall of 2019.<\/p>\n<p>Patricia Schade, College Reading\/Writing professor, plans to develop a Writing Fusion\/English Composition I course for incarcerated individuals, working with partners such as the Essex County Sheriff\u2019s Department.\u00a0 She will also be taking her sabbatical during the fall of 2019.<\/p>\n<p>Elle Yarborough, English professor, will focus on best practices for improving the effectiveness of faculty feedback on student\u2019s written work during the spring semester of 2020.<\/p>\n<h3>New Hires<\/h3>\n<p>Trustees affirmed the appointments of four new full-time employees: Jessica Wine, assistant professor, Nursing;
