Forty-seven Lawrence High School<\/a> seniors will begin college with almost a full year of college credits, thanks to an Early College Partnership<\/a> with Northern Essex Community College.<\/p>\n

The students have been attending courses offered on NECC\u2019s Lawrence Campus for the past two years.\u00a0 They were celebrated for their achievements at a recognition ceremony on Tuesday evening, May 21 at Northern Essex\u2019s El-Hefni Allied Health & Technology Center.<\/p>\n

NECC President Lane Glenn credited the Smith Family Foundation for providing the funding for the Early College Program.\u00a0 He also announced that\u2014as a result of a donation from the Stevens Foundation of North Andover\u2014twenty-six of these students have been selected as Lawrence Promise students and will continue on to Northern Essex for an associate degree with all expenses paid, including textbooks and a free laptop.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur goal is to give every Lawrence High School graduate access to the benefits of a college education,\u201d said Glenn.\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cWe\u2019re so happy that the Smith Family Foundation and Stevens Foundation are helping us make this a reality.\u201d<\/p>\n

All 47 Early College students are enrolled in college for the fall, according to Loris Toribio, Lawrence High School\u2019s early college coordinator.\u00a0\u00a0 In addition to Northern Essex, the students will be heading to West Point, Babson College, Bridgewater State University, Framingham State, Hult International Business School, Merrimack College, UMass Lowell, UMass Amherst, and Worcester State.<\/p>\n

One student Johan Mejia, will join the military, and, after basic training, he will enroll in online courses at Northern Essex as part of the Lawrence Promise Program.<\/p>\n

Alexis Martinez, the first Lawrence High School student to be accepted to West Point in almost four decades, was the student speaker at the recognition ceremony.\u00a0 He expressed appreciation for the Early College Program in his remarks to the audience of family, friends, and community leaders.\u00a0 \u201cThis opportunity is unique and none of us took it for granted,\u201d he said.\u00a0 \u201cWe learned how to make hard deadlines, time management, and procrastination management.\u201d<\/p>\n

He also told fellow graduates that this would be the start of great things.\u00a0 \u201cWe need to be the rose that grew from the concrete.\u00a0 Some people are handed everything on a silver platter but that\u2019s not us.\u00a0 It\u2019s important we stand together, and never give up on one another.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mayor Dan Rivera had a similar message for the graduates.\u00a0 \u201cMuch has been given to you, by your parents, by NECC, by your faculty and staff, and we want you to the best you can be.\u00a0 If you\u2019re going to bet on a kid, bet on a kid from Lawrence.\u00a0 We are always underappreciated and we always excel.\u201d<\/p>\n

Also speaking at the recognition ceremony were Noemi Custodia-Lora, NECC\u2019s vice president of the Lawrence Campus and community relations, and Michael Fiato, LHS headmaster.<\/p>\n

Northern Essex currently has Early College Programs<\/a> with Lawrence, Haverhill, Whittier and Amesbury high schools.\u00a0Last fall, there were 300 high school students receiving college credit from Northern Essex by enrolling in Early College Programs or other high school partnerships.<\/p>\n
