{"id":27291,"date":"2019-05-30T15:54:14","date_gmt":"2019-05-30T19:54:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/necc.edu\/newsroom2\/2019\/05\/30\/medical-assistants-are-in-high-demand\/"},"modified":"2026-05-14T14:15:49","modified_gmt":"2026-05-14T18:15:49","slug":"medical-assistants-are-in-high-demand","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/necc.edu\/newsroom\/2019\/05\/30\/medical-assistants-are-in-high-demand\/","title":{"rendered":"Medical Assistants are in High Demand"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_20650\" style=\"width: 210px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/media-old\/2019\/05\/Kathy-Welch-Hudson.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20650\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-20650\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/media-old\/2019\/05\/Kathy-Welch-Hudson-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-20650\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kathy Welch Hudson, director of the NECC Medical Assisting Program, worked for more than 20 years for a Boston Hospital before joining the NECC faculty.<br \/>Medical Assisting<br \/>Faculty<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A medical assisting certificate can lead to an in-demand job now and possibly a health care career later.<\/p>\n<p>Not only\u00a0is medical assisting one of the fastest growing jobs in the country, says Kathy Welch Hudson, program director of the NECC <a href=\"https:\/\/www.necc.mass.edu\/learn\/credit-programs\/health\/medical-assistant-certificate-day-program\/\">Medical Assistant Program<\/a>, it often leads to another health care career like nursing or respiratory care.<\/p>\n<p>Hudson, who also serves as NECC\u2019s Department Chair of the Healthcare Technology and Ambulatory Services within the Division of Health Professions, says medical assistants can work in a variety of health care settings including doctors\u2019 offices, hospitals, clinics, and wellness centers.<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/ooh\/healthcare\/medical-assistants.htm\">U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics<\/a>, Medical Assisting is one of the top 20 fastest growing jobs in the country right now. Healthcare is shifting from inpatient-hospital care to performing procedures on an outpatient basis \u2013 sometimes even in the doctor\u2019s office.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou get to work hands-on taking care of patients with a team of health care providers from all areas. It is truly a great place to start,\u201d she says. \u201cI have many students who complete the Medical Assistant program at NECC, work in a doctor\u2019s office, and return to our nursing, respiratory care, or rad tech programs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The nine-month Medical Assistant Certificate Program is offered days at NECC or evenings through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.necc.mass.edu\/learn\/credit-programs\/health\/medical-assistant-evening-program-certificate\/\">iHealth@NECC<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>For more than 20 years she worked at Beth Israel Hospital &#8211; first as a clinician and then moving into health care administration. She managed and operated several inpatient and ambulatory units before joining the faculty at NECC.<\/p>\n<p>Naturally, Hudson\u2019s vast experiences have provided her with lots of health care \u201cstories\u201d. Sharing these stories is one way she connects to her students.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEveryone loves a good story,\u201d she says. \u201cThe students can relate to a story.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Conversely, she enjoys hearing her students\u2019 stories as well.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI enjoy working with students of all ages and helping them pursue their goals,\u201d she says. \u201cI like to hear about their lives and backgrounds and what their overall goals are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>NECC provides the affordability, flexibility and work\/ life balance students need, she says.<\/p>\n<p>Students have so many great opportunities at NECC to get a great education and begin a new chapter of their lives as a health care professional, she says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are no secrets to success,\u201d she offers. \u201cIt is a result of preparation, hard work, and learning from failure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A medical assisting certificate can lead to an in-demand job now and possibly a health care career later.
