Early Childhood Education Program<\/a> for 19 years, researched multiple intelligence theories, which look at the different ways individuals learn.<\/p>\nShe created two projects: the first a two-hour workshop for community college professors that gives hands-on strategies for providing differentiated instruction and the second a book on multiple intelligence that she is co-writing with Doris Buckley, director of early childhood education pathways at NECC.<\/p>\n
Budzyna based much of her research on the findings of Dr. Howard Gardner, professor of education at Harvard University. Gardner\u2019s theory suggests that the traditional notion of intelligence, based on I.Q. testing, is far too limited. Instead, Dr. Gardner proposes eight different intelligences to account for a broader range of human potential in children and adults. These intelligences are:<\/p>\n
Linguistic intelligence (\u201cword smart\u201d): Logical-mathematical intelligence (\u201cnumber\/reasoning smart\u201d)
\nSpatial intelligence (\u201cpicture smart\u201d)
\nBodily-Kinesthetic intelligence (\u201cbody smart\u201d)
\nMusical intelligence (\u201cmusic smart\u201d)
\nInterpersonal intelligence (\u201cpeople smart\u201d)
\nIntrapersonal intelligence (\u201cself smart\u201d)
\nNaturalist intelligence (\u201cnature smart\u201d)
\n\u201cIf you teach to a student\u2019s intelligences, they are more likely to be successful,\u201d Budzyna told the trustees.<\/p>\n
Professor Clare Thompson: There\u2019s a Better Way to Learn Grammar<\/h5>\n
Clare Thompson, professor, Department of Academic Preparation, told trustees that when she teaches grammar, \u201cI feel like my students are lining up to get vaccinations.\u201d\u00a0 The goal of her sabbatical research was to explore how to get students to understand and enjoy grammar.<\/p>\n
Over the years, she had tried a number of different approaches, including games, but she found \u201cit just wasn\u2019t translating into their essays.\u201d<\/p>\n
On her sabbatical, she created \u201csentencemakers.com\u201d, a website featuring grammar lessons and editing strategies that uses a new approach, called decision-based editing.\u00a0\u00a0 Rather than focusing on fixing mistakes and finding errors, the lessons encourage students to make one small change to their sentence.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe hope is that one small decision will more likely cause you to make other editing decision in your writing.\u201d<\/p>\n
