The NECC Jazz Ensemble<\/p><\/div>\n

Northern Essex Community College<\/a>\u2019s jazz\/rock ensemble\u2019s December concert will feature favorites composed by Bill Withers, Sonny Rollins, and others as well as original student work.\u00a0 Free and open to the public, the \u201cnight club style\u201d performance will be held on Thursday, December 12, beginning at 7 p.m., in the Hartleb Technology Center, Haverhill Campus, 100 Elliott St.<\/p>\n

The title of the performance\u2014 \u201cInstruments in a New Voice\u201d\u2014describes how the group is taking traditional and standard repertoire and giving it their \u201cunique interpretation\u201d, according to Dr. David Garcia, associate professor of music and director of the ensemble.\u00a0\u00a0 For example, the group is linking Bill Withers\u2019 \u201cAin\u2019t No Sunshine\u201d with Herbie Hancock\u2019s \u201cChameleon\u201d.<\/p>\n

Original compositions will include Faul Burke\u2019s \u201cEverywhere I Go\u201d.\u00a0 Burke, who performs with the band Powdeer, is taking a new approach.\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cIt\u2019s not the way my band does it, but this way it gives it a new voice.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is going to be a unique event, and I\u2019m very proud of what this group has in store for the audience,\u201d said Garcia.<\/p>\n

In addition to Garcia, saxophone and director, and Burke, guitar, the ensemble includes Frank Gonzo, vocals; Kelvin Nguyen, vibraphone; Zane Nishan, bass; James Andrew Norman, guitar; and Nate Twiss, drums.<\/p>\n
