Irish historian Christine Kinealy, PhD, will present the March 4 White Fund lecture.<\/p><\/div>\n

Emmy Award winning historian and educator Christine Kinealy will present the Sunday, March 4, White Fund lecture titled \u201cHow Ireland changed Frederick Douglass,” at 2 p.m. at the Lawrence Heritage State Park Visitor Center, 1 Jackson St., Lawrence.<\/p>\n

Presented by NECC, The White Fund Enlightenment Lecture Series<\/a>\u00a0is free and open to the public.<\/p>\n

The English-born Kinealy received her PhD from Trinity College in Ireland. She has worked in educational and research institutes in Dublin, Belfast, and England. An authority on Irish history, she has lived in the United States since 2007. In September of 2013, Kinealy was appointed the founding Director of Ireland\u2019s Great Hunger Institute at Quinnipiac University in Connecticut.<\/p>\n

She has published extensively on modern Ireland, with a focus on the Great Hunger. These publications include, \u201cThis Great Calamity. The Great Irish Famine 1845-52\u201d, \u201cRepeal and Revolution. 1848 in Ireland\u201d, and \u201cDaniel O\u2019Connell and Abolition. The Saddest People the Sun Sees,\u201d and \u201cCharity and the Great Hunger in Ireland. The Kindness of Strangers\u201d. More recently, she completed a graphic novel on the Great Hunger, titled, \u201cThe Bad Times\u201d<\/p>\n

Kinealy is also a director of the Frederick Douglass Ireland Project, and is currently completing a book on Frederick Douglass and Ireland.<\/p>\n

She was named one of the top 100 educators in Irish America.\u00a0In March 2014, she was also inducted into the Irish America Hall of Fame. In 2017, she won an Emmy for her contribution to the documentary, \u201cThe Great Hunger and the Irish Diaspora\u201d.<\/p>\n

Frederick Bailey was born into slavery in Maryland in 1818. At 20, he escaped to the North and changed his surname to Douglass. As a fugitive slave, he remained in danger of being captured and returned to slavery.\u00a0 For safety, in 1845, following the publication of his \u2018Narrative\u2019, he sought refuge in Ireland and Britain.\u00a0 Frederick spent the early part of his exile in Ireland. He initially had intended to spend four days in the country, but the warmth of the welcome meant that he stayed for four months. He referred to this time as the ‘happiest moments’ of his life.<\/p>\n

The White Fund\u2019s purpose is to have a free series of interactive presentations for Lawrence area adults, youth, and children. The audience is encouraged to seek wisdom, cultural enrichment, and intellectual enhancement by attending and participating.<\/p>\n

Funded by a generous financial gift from the Honorable Daniel Appleton White, the White Fund Lecture Series has provided cultural conversation featuring well-known lecturers in fields such as history, literature, travel, the arts, and politics. The White Fund is collaborating with Northern Essex on this series.<\/p>\n
