His intent was for students, teachers, and community members to \u201cembrace this social justice activity\u201d. They did.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEach year, I am\u00a0pleasantly surprised by the volume of submissions, but,\u00a0more important,\u00a0I\u00a0am\u00a0overwhelmed by the care and level of poetic expression found in the entries. The reading event just keeps getting better, filling our Tech Center to capacity each spring on the night of the reading,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_17279\" style=\"width: 210px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/media-old\/2018\/02\/Paul-Saint-Amand-PhD.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17279\" class=\"wp-image-17279 size-medium\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/media-old\/2018\/02\/Paul-Saint-Amand-PhD-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-17279\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">NECC Professor Paul Saint-Amand, PhD, launched the Peace Poetry Contest and Reading 10 years ago.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>This year is no different. Peace inspired poetry, art, or videos will be accepted through Thursday, March 15. NECC students, faculty, and staff as well as students from area K-12 classrooms (both public and private) and those adults affiliated with these schools are invited to create and submit original poems.<\/p>\n<p>The reading event for the winning submissions is Friday, May 4, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Hartleb Technology Center on the Haverhill campus, 100 Elliott St.<\/p>\n<p>One Haverhill elementary school class has made it an annual tradition to create and submit videos promoting anti-bullying and multiculturalism while a local Islamic school also makes regular submissions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe believe that children cannot learn to speak the language of possibility, or envision a culture of peace, if they do not have the opportunity to identify such moments and values within themselves and their relationships,\u201d says Saint-Amand. \u201cIt is our responsibility, as educators, to offer students a way to fuel their imaginations and embrace the concept of peace.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Saint-Amand, is also founder and project director of the National Peace Poetry Project and the director of the Vietnam Veterans Chapbook Project.\u00a0He has taught at NECC since 2007. He previously taught at a number of institutions including SUNY- Potsdam, NY.
