{"id":27771,"date":"2018-04-30T18:47:25","date_gmt":"2018-04-30T22:47:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/necc.edu\/newsroom2\/2018\/04\/30\/jinette\/"},"modified":"2026-05-14T16:20:32","modified_gmt":"2026-05-14T20:20:32","slug":"jinette","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/necc.edu\/newsroom\/2018\/04\/30\/jinette\/","title":{"rendered":"Future Teacher will be Honored at State House by Governor Baker"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_17619\" style=\"width: 210px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/media-old\/2018\/04\/Jinette.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17619\" class=\"wp-image-17619 size-medium\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/media-old\/2018\/04\/Jinette-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-17619\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jinette Galarza, recipient of the &#8220;29 Who Shine&#8221; Award<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Jinette Galarza of Lawrence is a full-time Northern Essex Community College student who works 40-hours a week as a sterile processing technician at Holy Family Hospital and is a campus and community leader.\u00a0\u00a0 On Friday, May 4, Governor Charlie Baker will recognize her for her extraordinary accomplishments at a ceremony at the State House.<\/p>\n<p>Galarza has been selected as one of the \u201c29 Who Shine\u201d, an honor which is given to a top graduate from each of the state\u2019s community colleges and public colleges and universities.\u00a0 Also recognized at the ceremony will be Galarza&#8217;s mentor, Sarah Courchesne, chemistry professor.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.necc.mass.edu\/learn\/credit-programs\/liberal-arts\/\">liberal arts<\/a> major, Galarza will graduate with high honors and plans to enroll in the Commonwealth Honors College at UMass Lowell in the fall, majoring in history with a minor in Arabic studies, and then earn her master\u2019s.\u00a0 Her goal is to be a high school history teacher and teach in her city.\u00a0 \u201cThe necessity is great and there is great potential in our Lawrence youth,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>Originally from Puerto Rico, Galarza, now 32, moved to Lawrence when she was 10 years old.\u00a0 She attended middle school in the city and went on to graduate from Essex Agricultural School in Danvers.<\/p>\n<p>After high school, she joined the workforce to help support her family which included her mother and her stepfather, who recently passed away.<\/p>\n<p>Galarza is active in her church serving as a youth leader for the past 10 years and participating in seven missionary trips to poverty-stricken areas in Panama, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, China, and Western Sahara. It was through her work as a youth leader that Galarza discovered she had a talent and passion for teaching, and through her missionary trips that she found she loved learning about other cultures. \u201cCommunity service led me to my calling,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>Most people would find juggling full-time college and full-time work enough of a challenge but not Galarza.\u00a0 She has served on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.necc.mass.edu\/experience\/student-government-association\/\">Student Senate<\/a>, as a presidential ambassador, and as a student orientation leader; is campus life editor for the \u201cObserver\u201d, the college\u2019s student newspaper; and recently organized Northern Essex\u2019s first Renaissance Fair, which brought hundreds of people to campus.<\/p>\n<p>In May 2011, the Massachusetts Department of Higher Education launched<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mass.edu\/system\/29whoshine.asp\"> \u201c29 Who Shine,\u201d<\/a> a program to recognize outstanding students representing each of the 29 public campuses.
