The 35 LHS seniors who were recognized for participation in the Early College Program. All are headed for college in the fall.<\/p><\/div>\n

Thirty-five Lawrence High School seniors will be heading to college in the fall with up to 18 college credits each, thanks to their participation in the Northern Essex Community College Early College Program<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The students were honored at a recognition ceremony held on May 22 at Northern Essex\u2019s El-Hefni Allied Health & Technology Center.<\/p>\n

Aysha Polanco will bring her 12 Northern Essex credits to UMass Dartmouth where she will major in Crime and Justice Studies.\u00a0 She hopes to intern with the FBI and chose UMass Dartmouth because of its internship program. Because of her participation in the Early College Program, she plans to graduate from college a semester early, allowing her to get started on her master\u2019s degree.\u00a0 \u201cThis program was extremely helpful,\u201d she says.\u00a0 \u201cI feel ready for college.\u201d<\/p>\n

Michael Fiato, Lawrence High School principal, who spoke at the event, said Early College programs like this one help more students to be successful.\u00a0 \u201cOne of the main reasons kids drop out of high school is that they are underprepared,\u201d he said.\u00a0 \u201cThis program addresses that.\u00a0 All are going to college.\u201d<\/p>\n

The top college choice for the group was UMass Lowell, which has accepted 11 students for the fall.\u00a0 Eight students have elected to start their education at Northern Essex, the second most popular choice, and the others are going to a wide range of public and private colleges including Providence College, Boston University, College of the Holy Cross, Tufts University, and more.<\/p>\n

Students in the Early College Program chose from four college tracks: health, education, computer and information science (CIS) or engineering.\u00a0 After their high school classes were over, the students boarded a bus and traveled to Northern Essex\u2019s Lawrence Campus for their college courses.<\/p>\n

One hundred and two Lawrence High School students took courses at Northern Essex this past year at a discounted cost of $110 per credit.\u00a0 Tuition and fees were covered by a $2 million grant from the Smith Family Foundation<\/a>, which Lawrence Public Schools received last fall.\u00a0 The grant funded partnerships with Northern Essex and Merrimack College.<\/p>\n

Student Speaker Juana Paola Guerrero, who will bring 15 credits to UMass Lowell in the fall, said it was challenging but totally worth it.\u00a0 \u201cThe Early College Program allowed us to experience what college will be like.\u00a0 We improved our time management skills and what we learned will ease the transition to college.\u201d<\/p>\n

Other speakers included Lane Glenn, president of Northern Essex; Noemi Custodia Lora, vice president of the Lawrence Campus and community relations; and Maurisa Charest, NECC Early College Professor.<\/p>\n

Early College students who were honored included:Jailisse Arias, Danisha Aristy, Anabeliz Brito-Henriquez, Erika Canela, Keiddy Curiel, Chernys Deleon, Elsa Diffo-Tiayo, Ann Dopson, Yankelina Duran, Kendra Echavarria, Andrea Grullon, Juana Paola Guerrero, Giannina Guillermo, Karina Hernandez, Karolina Hernandez, Jennifer Lantigua, Erika Martinez, Briana Medina, Elena Melendez, Michelle Thao Nguyen, Minh Phan, Jasmine Pimentel, Aysha Polanco, Mari Rodriguez, Keysha Rosado, Pamela Sanchez, Wildaly Santana, Darlene Santos, Robert Santos, Ashley Silvestre, Cariany Tavarez, Stevenson Theosmy, Leidiarys Torres-Mediana, Davina Velez, and Alexander Victorino.<\/p>\n
