{"id":27953,"date":"2018-08-30T12:40:28","date_gmt":"2018-08-30T16:40:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/necc.edu\/newsroom2\/2018\/08\/30\/massgrantplus\/"},"modified":"2026-05-14T16:24:16","modified_gmt":"2026-05-14T20:24:16","slug":"massgrantplus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/necc.edu\/newsroom\/2018\/08\/30\/massgrantplus\/","title":{"rendered":"New State Financial Aid Program will Benefit Community College Students"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/media-old\/2018\/08\/scholarship_money_mortar_board-1477662914-3799.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-18706 size-medium\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/media-old\/2018\/08\/scholarship_money_mortar_board-1477662914-3799-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a>This fall, students heading to Northern Essex Community College, as well as the 14 other Massachusetts community colleges, may be eligible for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mass.edu\/about\/whatsnew.asp#massgrantplus\">additional financial aid<\/a>, thanks to a boost in financial aid funding proposed by the Baker-Polito administration and included in the state\u2019s FY19 budget recently enacted by the legislature and signed by the governor.<\/p>\n<p>The new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mass.edu\/osfa\/programs\/massgrant.asp\">MassGrant Plus<\/a> represents the first significant expansion of the state\u2019s signature financial aid program in more than two decades, and, for the first time, part-time students are eligible, providing they are taking at least two courses totaling six credits per semester.<\/p>\n<p>Made possible by an additional $7.5 million in funding,\u00a0MassGrant Plus\u00a0will provide \u201clast dollar\u201d funding to bridge the gap between a low-income community college student\u2019s federal, state and institutional financial aid awards, and the total cost of tuition and fees.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt Northern Essex, nearly 68% of our students are part time,\u201d said Lane Glenn, president of Northern Essex. \u201cIn many cases our students are working one or more jobs, supporting a family, and enrolled in two or more classes. This MassGrant Plus will make it much easier for them to continue their education.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re very pleased that Governor Baker and the legislature are moving so decisively to invest in our community college students,\u201d\u00a0said Carlos E.
