Award-winning poet Martin Espada will be the Oct. 23, White Fund lecturer.<\/p><\/div>\n

Award-winning, American poet, Mart\u00edn Espada<\/a>, the first Latino to win the Ruth Lilly Poetry Prize<\/a>, will read from various works during the Tuesday, Oct 23, White Fund Lecture Series event offered in partnership with Northern Essex Community College<\/a> on Tuesday, at 6 p.m. at the Lawrence Public Library (LPL), 51 Lawrence St.<\/p>\n

There will be a discussion group on Thursday, Oct. 18, at 6 p.m. in the LPL.<\/p>\n

The Ruth Lilly Prize honors a living U.S. poet for outstanding lifetime achievement. Espada was awarded the prize in recognition of his contribution to poetry.<\/p>\n

Born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1957, Espada has published almost 20 books as a poet, editor, essayist, and translator. His latest collection of poems is titled \u201cVivas to Those Who Have Failed.\u201d Other books of poems include\u00a0\u201cThe Trouble Ball,\u201d\u00a0\u201cThe Republic of Poetry,\u201d and \u201cAlabanza.\u201d<\/p>\n

In addition to receiving the Ruth Lilly Poetry Prize, he is the recipient of the Shelley Memorial Award, the Robert Creeley Award, the National Hispanic Cultural Center Literary Award, an American Book Award, an Academy of American Poets Fellowship, the PEN\/Revson Fellowship and a Guggenheim Fellowship.\u00a0\u201cThe Republic of Poetry\u201d\u00a0was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. The title poem of his collection\u00a0\u201cAlabanza,\u201d about 9\/11, has been widely anthologized and performed.<\/p>\n

He earned a bachelor\u2019s in history at the University of Wisconsin\u2013Madison and a Juris Doctorate from Northeastern University. As an attorney, he served as supervisor of Su Cl\u00ednica Legal, a legal services program for low-income, Spanish-speaking tenants in Chelsea. As a poet, an essayist, an editor, and a translator, he has dedicated himself to the pursuit of social justice, and fighting for the rights of Latino community.<\/p>\n

Espada is a professor of English at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst.<\/p>\n

The White Fund\u2019s purpose is to have a free series of interactive presentations for Lawrence area adults, youth, and children. The audience is encouraged to seek wisdom, cultural enrichment, and intellectual enhancement by attending and participating.<\/p>\n

Funded by a generous financial gift from the Honorable Daniel Appleton White, the White Fund Lecture Series has provided cultural conversation featuring well-known lecturers in fields such as history, literature, travel, the arts, and politics. The White Fund is collaborating with Northern Essex on this series.<\/p>\n
