Back row, Jesus Chico of Lawrence.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Because of a shortage of sleep technologists, students in Northern Essex Community College\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.necc.mass.edu\/academics\/courses-programs\/areas\/health\/sleep-technologist\/\">Sleep Technology Certificate Program<\/a> are getting jobs before they graduate.<\/p>\n<p>Eager to hire more sleep technologists, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.neurocareinc.com\/\">Neurocare, Inc.<\/a>, the largest employer of sleep technologists in Massachusetts, recently expanded its relationship with the college.<\/p>\n<p>A clinical site for Northern Essex students for the past seven years, starting this year, Neurocare is hiring students for paid, entry-level positions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis was a terrific opportunity for our students,\u201d said John Murray, program coordinator.\u00a0 \u201cThey get hands-on experience, earn money, and have first dibs at full-time jobs when they graduate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Neurocare is in the process of interviewing and hiring members of the class of 2017, said Murray, and, not surprisingly, the students \u201care loving it.\u201d\u00a0 Last spring, half of the graduating class of 18 was hired by Neurocare.<\/p>\n<p>The shortage of sleep technologists is being driven in part by the closure of at least two sleep technology programs in recent years.\u00a0 \u00a0Northern Essex is currently the only college in New England graduating sleep technologists.<\/p>\n<p>Murray said the new partnership benefits Neurocare as well as the students, who get hands-on experience and begin earning while still in college.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we didn\u2019t have Northern Essex, we wouldn\u2019t be able to service our clients\u2019 needs,\u201d said Pam Hurlburt of Neurocare, who said she has confidence in the quality of the Northern Essex program and the preparedness of its graduates.<\/p>\n<p>Adlin Siri of Haverhill, a 2016 graduate of the program, started working for Neurocare\u2019s sleep clinic at Lawrence General Hospital three weeks after her graduation. The 2004 Lawrence High School graduate says the field is \u201cinteresting\u201d and \u201crewarding\u201d.\u00a0 \u201cIt feels so good to help someone with a sleep issue like apnea.\u00a0\u00a0 You really feel like you\u2019ve accomplished something.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_15003\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/media-old\/2017\/01\/Sleep-Technology-Adlin.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15003\" class=\"wp-image-15003 size-medium\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/media-old\/2017\/01\/Sleep-Technology-Adlin-300x200.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-15003\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Adlin Siri of Haverhill scores a sleep study in the sleep lab at Lawrence General Hospital.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The field of sleep technology requires excellent communication and critical thinking skills.
