{"id":28220,"date":"2017-02-15T13:11:51","date_gmt":"2017-02-15T18:11:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/necc.edu\/newsroom2\/2017\/02\/15\/popular-engineering-guitar-workshop-returns\/"},"modified":"2026-05-14T17:05:09","modified_gmt":"2026-05-14T21:05:09","slug":"popular-engineering-guitar-workshop-returns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/necc.edu\/newsroom\/2017\/02\/15\/popular-engineering-guitar-workshop-returns\/","title":{"rendered":"Popular Engineering, Guitar Workshop Returns"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_15157\" style=\"width: 194px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/media-old\/2017\/02\/signed-soundboard.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15157\" class=\"wp-image-15157 size-medium\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/media-old\/2017\/02\/signed-soundboard-184x300.jpg\" width=\"184\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-15157\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The early stages of a guitar&#8230;.a signed guitar soundboard.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Last march, when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.necc.mass.edu\/\">Northern Essex Community College<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.necc.mass.edu\/academics\/courses-programs\/areas\/technology-engineering\/\">engineering <\/a>professor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.necc.mass.edu\/newsroom\/2016\/09\/19\/necc-profile-juan-oscar-azaret\/\">Juan Oscar Azaret<\/a> crafted a one-night workshop weaving together physics, engineering, and the classical guitar, he worried it wouldn\u2019t draw an audience.<\/p>\n<p>When more than 100 faculty, students, and community members filled the Hartleb Technology Center on the Haverhill campus, he knew he had found kindred souls.<\/p>\n<p>The North Andover resident is hoping to attract those musical allies with a second one-night workshop titled \u201cThose Mysterious Existences: Art, Science, Lutherie, and the Classical Guitar\u201d on Wednesday, March 8, at 6:30 p.m. in the Hartleb Technology Center, 100 Elliott St. on the Haverhill campus.<\/p>\n<p>This event is free and open to the public.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_15156\" style=\"width: 127px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/media-old\/2017\/02\/NECC-portrait-with-Guitar.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15156\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-15156\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/media-old\/2017\/02\/NECC-portrait-with-Guitar-117x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"117\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-15156\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Engineering Professor Juan Oscar Azaret.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>An engineer of 35 years, Azaret is also a classical guitarist and luthier (someone who makes or repairs string instruments)\u00a0and a long time board member of the Boston Classical Guitar Society. Multitalented, Azaret has a multi-faceted appreciation of the classical guitar and believes others can too.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis idea that the classical guitar and the sound it produces can be of interest to students of varied disciplines was the catalyst for these events. The evening is designed around the idea of \u201cthe art and science of the classical guitar,\u201d Azaret says, \u201cthrough performance, perception, design, and acoustics.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis project will provide a vehicle for students in each of these fields to appreciate certain foundations and applications of their studies as they relate to each other,\u201d he says. \u201cWe want them to be interested in the academics of it, but entertained as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The program will include performances of classical guitar works by Robert Ward, a professor at Northeastern University and Brookline Music School and concert<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_15154\" style=\"width: 210px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/media-old\/2017\/02\/bobward-portrait.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15154\" class=\"size-full wp-image-15154\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/media-old\/2017\/02\/bobward-portrait.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-15154\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Classical guitarist Bob Ward will perform during the one-night workshop.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>guitarist. The focus will be on the music and how \u201cbeautiful and approachable music\u201d is created on a classical guitar as well as how guitars are created. Partially constructed guitars will be available to show the anatomy of the instrument.<\/p>\n<p>The second half of the night will be dedicated to examining sound. Specifically the science and engineering that creates the sound.
