{"id":28264,"date":"2017-03-07T17:35:32","date_gmt":"2017-03-07T22:35:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/necc.edu\/newsroom2\/2017\/03\/07\/necc-selected-to-participate-in-national-loan-counseling-experiment\/"},"modified":"2026-05-14T17:06:04","modified_gmt":"2026-05-14T21:06:04","slug":"necc-selected-to-participate-in-national-loan-counseling-experiment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/necc.edu\/newsroom\/2017\/03\/07\/necc-selected-to-participate-in-national-loan-counseling-experiment\/","title":{"rendered":"NECC Selected to Participate in National Loan Counseling Experiment"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_15276\" style=\"width: 233px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/media-old\/2017\/03\/Alexis-Fishbone.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15276\" class=\"wp-image-15276 size-medium\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/media-old\/2017\/03\/Alexis-Fishbone-223x300.jpg\" width=\"223\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-15276\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Alexis Fishbone, NECC director of financial aid<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Only a quarter of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.necc.mass.edu\/\">Northern Essex Community College <\/a>students take out student loans but the college wants to be sure that those students who do are making educated decisions about the debt they are taking on.<\/p>\n<p>Northern Essex, along with 50 other colleges across the nation, has applied to and been selected to participate in an experimental loan counseling program conducted by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ed.gov\/\">Department of Education<\/a> that will begin this fall.\u00a0 The program will test the effectiveness of adding counseling sessions and a host of new tools in helping students manage their debt.<\/p>\n<p>When the program is launched, there were will be two randomly selected student control groups at Northern Essex.\u00a0 The first group will receive the currently required entrance\u00a0counseling session when applying for their first federal loan. \u00a0The second group will be required to complete an additional counseling session each subsequent year they request federal loans using a new tool that will allow for in person, hybrid and online sessions.<\/p>\n<p>The two groups will be carefully tracked over several years and the Department of Education and the\u00a0college will measure the data to determine what factors are helping students to be successful.\u00a0 \u201cWe will look at graduation rates, repayment rates, and default rates,\u201d said Alexis Fishbone, NECC\u2019s director of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.necc.mass.edu\/getting-started\/financial-aid\/\">financial aid<\/a>.\u00a0 \u201cWe\u2019re hoping what we learn will help our students become more educated consumers.\u00a0 If we can give them the tools to take on fewer or more manageable loans, this experiment will be successful.\u201d\u00a0 The data will also help the Department of Education determine what\u2019s most successful nationally and make policy decisions based on what they learn.<\/p>\n<p>Northern Essex\u2019s default rate has been decreasing in recent years from a high of 19.5* in 2010 to 13.6* in 2013, and the college is hopeful that the additional counseling will bring the rates down even further.<\/p>\n<p>Nearly three-quarters of the\u00a0schools selected for the pilot program are public two-year institutions, while 14 are public four-year colleges.
