{"id":28282,"date":"2017-03-10T16:26:48","date_gmt":"2017-03-10T21:26:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/necc.edu\/newsroom2\/2017\/03\/10\/necc-offers-stem-program-for-science-majors\/"},"modified":"2026-05-14T17:06:23","modified_gmt":"2026-05-14T21:06:23","slug":"necc-offers-stem-program-for-science-majors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/necc.edu\/newsroom\/2017\/03\/10\/necc-offers-stem-program-for-science-majors\/","title":{"rendered":"NECC Offers STEM Program for Science Majors"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_15328\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/media-old\/2017\/03\/STEM-Newsroom.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15328\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-15328\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/media-old\/2017\/03\/STEM-Newsroom-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-15328\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">High School juniors and seniors hoping to study science in college could benefit from attending the STEM Bridge summer program at Quarrybrook.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Recent high school graduates as well as high school juniors and seniors, planning on studying science in college, might benefit from a bridge program offered by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.necc.mass.edu\/\">Northern Essex Community College<\/a> this summer.<\/p>\n<p>Designed to review math and science concepts, the one-week long <a href=\"https:\/\/www.quarrybrook.org\/stem-bridge-academy\">STEM Bridge Academy<\/a> will be offered by NECC at its affiliate campus at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.quarrybrook.org\/\">Quarrybrook Experiential Education Center <\/a>at the Windham, NH, facility from 8 a.m. to 4:30\u00a0p.m. June 26\u00a0through June 30.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe STEM Bridge Academy addresses the needs of many first-semester science students who are surprised by how much knowledge they are expected to bring to the college classroom,\u201d said Kirsten Kortz, NECC professor and STEM Bridge coordinator.\u00a0 \u201cIn addition to concepts from chemistry, biology, and physics, there are also math and literacy skills that are needed in college science courses, and knowledge of how to conduct and write-up lab and field experiments.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_15326\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/media-old\/2017\/03\/quarrybrook-newsroom.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15326\" class=\"wp-image-15326 size-medium\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/media-old\/2017\/03\/quarrybrook-newsroom-300x158.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"158\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-15326\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Quarrybrook Experiential Education Center in Windham, NH.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>This summer\u2019s theme is \u201cMapping the Ecosystem.\u201d Students will work alongside NECC faculty and Quarrybrook educators to study the health of the water, soil, and animals at Quarrybrook, which sits on 245 acres of natural forest and marsh lands. Through field and lab work, students will learn the basics of scientific research design and data analysis, and will have the opportunity to present their findings to their peers.<\/p>\n<p>Quarrybrook is a nonprofit, experiential education center, which NECC has been managing since fall of 2015.
