{"id":28458,"date":"2017-06-28T17:54:26","date_gmt":"2017-06-28T21:54:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/necc.edu\/newsroom2\/2017\/06\/28\/northern-essex-to-manage-employment-centers\/"},"modified":"2026-05-14T17:09:50","modified_gmt":"2026-05-14T21:09:50","slug":"northern-essex-to-manage-employment-centers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/necc.edu\/newsroom\/2017\/06\/28\/northern-essex-to-manage-employment-centers\/","title":{"rendered":"Northern Essex to Manage Employment Centers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/media-old\/2017\/06\/valleyworks.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-15945\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/media-old\/2017\/06\/valleyworks-300x70.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"70\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.necc.mass.edu\/\">Northern Essex Community College<\/a> has been selected by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mvwib.org\/\">Merrimack Valley Workforce Investment Board<\/a> to assume management and operational responsibilities for the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.valleyworks.cc\/\"> ValleyWorks One-Stop Career Center<\/a>, one of 16 regional employment centers across Massachusetts.<\/p>\n<p>The center has locations in Haverhill and Lawrence and serves over 10,000 job seekers and 700 employers each year, providing employment and training services for youth, unemployed and under-employed adults, and laid-off workers, as well as recruitment and incumbent worker training for local companies. \u00a0Funding for the center, currently $2 million per year, is provided by the U.S. Department of Labor, through the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.doleta.gov\/wioa\/\">Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act<\/a>, which provides resources to states and local workforce investment boards.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4092\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/media-old\/2012\/08\/George-Moriarty-1-web.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4092\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4092\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/media-old\/2012\/08\/George-Moriarty-1-web-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-4092\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">George Moriarty, NECC&#8217;s executive director of workforce development and corporate relations<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The centers will be managed by NECC\u2019s Center for Corporate and Community Education, led by George Moriarty. \u00a0He has previous experience with Career Centers and with the state\u2019s Office of Labor and Workforce Development. Moriarty is uniquely positioned to build on the organizational strengths of the college and the center in order to better serve residents of the Merrimack Valley.<\/p>\n<p>The approximately 26 staff currently employed by ValleyWorks will continue in their positions. \u00a0As part of the management contract, Northern Essex will open a satellite location in downtown Haverhill as well as continuing to provide a full-service center at the existing 255 Essex St, Lawrence location.
