{"id":28501,"date":"2017-07-31T18:41:44","date_gmt":"2017-07-31T22:41:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/necc.edu\/newsroom2\/2017\/07\/31\/verizon-funds-necc-science-project\/"},"modified":"2026-05-14T17:10:36","modified_gmt":"2026-05-14T21:10:36","slug":"verizon-funds-necc-science-project","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/necc.edu\/newsroom\/2017\/07\/31\/verizon-funds-necc-science-project\/","title":{"rendered":"Verizon Funds \u00a0NECC Science Project"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_16142\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/media-old\/2017\/07\/NECC-President-Lane-Glenn-and-Verizons-Stephanie-Lee-copy.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16142\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-16142\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/media-old\/2017\/07\/NECC-President-Lane-Glenn-and-Verizons-Stephanie-Lee-copy-300x235.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"235\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-16142\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">NECC President Lane Glenn accepts a $10,000 donation from Stephanie Lee of Verizon for the continued support of the Seagull Banding Project coordinated by NECC Professor Sarah Courchesne.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Sea gulls squawked as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.necc.mass.edu\/\">Northern Essex Community College<\/a> Natural Science Professor Sarah Courchesne and a half dozen of her students chased them across Appledore Island in Maine as part of a sea gull banding project, funded in part, by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/VerizonFoundation\/\">Verizon Foundation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Over the last two summers, about two dozen Northern Essex students under the tutelage of Courchesne, coordinator of the project, have trapped and banded Great Black-Backed and Herring gulls and collected blood samples at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shoalsmarinelaboratory.org\/\">Shoals Marine Laboratory<\/a> on Appledore Island. Each year, the Verizon Foundation has donated $10,000 to the field science program that brings NECC students out of the classroom and into nature where they gather data that is then brought back to the classroom so biology and lab science students can perform diet analysis and necropsies of dead gulls.<\/p>\n<p>Last year the funds were used to purchase GPS technology to tag the individual sea birds to track their movements. This year\u2019s grant funds the purchase of additional tags and a base station used to monitor the individual seagulls throughout the year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know that allowing students to experiment, question, and practice science themselves is the best way to stimulate and maintain their interest in science not only as a subject, but as a verb,\u201d said Courchesne, NECC natural sciences professor who oversees the project. \u201cOpportunities for students to participate in and perform their own research are limited at community colleges\u2026on-campus research opportunities are slim\u2026By expanding our campus outward to include work at the Shoals Marine Laboratory we bring our students into a community of world class scientists, and by bringing that work back into the classroom students can analyze the material in our labs and we broaden their understanding of what being a science student means.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_16141\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/media-old\/2017\/07\/Seagull-Banding-Project.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16141\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-16141\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/media-old\/2017\/07\/Seagull-Banding-Project-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-16141\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">NECC students band seagulls on Appledore Island.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>While seven NECC students participated in each of the two annual Appledore trips, a total of 48 students in the fall and spring semesters participate in the microbiological and DNA analysis of the summer samples collected in the field.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn order to be prepared for jobs of the future, it&#8217;s essential for every student to have access to experiential learning, which is why the Verizon Foundation supports programs that engage students in science, technology, engineering and math education,\u201d said Verizon Foundation spokesperson Stephanie Lee. \u201cWith about 9 million available STEM jobs \u2013 and over 4 million available jobs in science and technology alone \u2013 students need access to education and resources that will prepare them for success in tomorrow\u2019s high-tech world.\u00a0 We are proud to partner with Northern Essex to bring opportunities for students to explore science in its natural habitat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Northern Essex offers an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.necc.mass.edu\/academics\/courses-programs\/areas\/science\/associate-in-science-biology-degree\/\">Associate of Science in Biology<\/a>; an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.necc.mass.edu\/academics\/courses-programs\/areas\/science\/laboratory-science\/\">Associate of Applied Science in Laboratory Science<\/a>; and an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.necc.mass.edu\/academics\/courses-programs\/areas\/science\/liberal-arts-physical-science\/\">Associate of Art in Liberal Arts: Physical Science.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sea gulls squawked as Northern Essex Community College Natural Science Professor Sarah Courchesne and a half dozen of her students chased them across Appledore Island in Maine as part of [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":164,"featured_media":28503,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"inline_featured_image":false,"footnotes":"","_links_to":"","_links_to_target":""},"categories":[10],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-28501","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-archive"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v26.2 -
