{"id":28557,"date":"2017-08-30T19:50:09","date_gmt":"2017-08-30T23:50:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/necc.edu\/newsroom2\/2017\/08\/30\/nursing-is-her-calling\/"},"modified":"2026-05-14T17:11:48","modified_gmt":"2026-05-14T21:11:48","slug":"nursing-is-her-calling","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/necc.edu\/newsroom\/2017\/08\/30\/nursing-is-her-calling\/","title":{"rendered":"Nursing is Her Calling"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_16308\" style=\"width: 224px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/media-old\/2017\/08\/AllisonBelisle.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16308\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-16308\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/media-old\/2017\/08\/AllisonBelisle-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-16308\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Allison Belisle, Nursing<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Allison Belisle of Haverhill always had an interest in nursing, but it took some time for her to realize it was truly her calling.<\/p>\n<p>After graduating from Haverhill High School in 2009, Allison attended a small private school in Pennsylvania, where she majored in German planning to be a teacher.<\/p>\n<p>When she became disillusioned with that, she returned home to Haverhill, and, at the urging of her father, enrolled in college close to home at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.necc.mass.edu\/\">Northern Essex<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>That led to an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.necc.mass.edu\/academics\/courses-programs\/areas\/communication-arts\/liberal-arts-journalism-communication\/\">Associate Degree in Liberal Arts: Journalism\/Communications<\/a> from Northern Essex in 2014 but, still, she couldn\u2019t stop thinking about nursing. Allison decided it was time to listen to her instincts. She took her prerequisite science courses and jumped right in, starting Nursing I in the fall of 2014 when her now three-year old son Cooper was just one-year old.<\/p>\n<p>Balancing classes, studying, and clinical rotations with being a wife and mother wasn\u2019t easy but Belisle credits her family for their support.<\/p>\n<p>Her mother and her mother-in-law provided child care during the week and her \u00a0husband, Bryan, did whatever he could to help. As she says \u201che carried me through.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This spring, she received a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.necc.mass.edu\/academics\/courses-programs\/areas\/health\/nursing\/\">nursing associate degree<\/a> with high honors from Northern Essex, and she\u2019s now studying for her nursing boards and interviewing for jobs. Her summer plans include a trip to Germany with her son to visit her maternal grandparents.<\/p>\n<p>In the fall, she will continue on for a bachelor\u2019s degree in nursing, attending an online program or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.regiscollege.edu\/academics\/necc-courses.cfm\">Regis North<\/a> which offers bachelor\u2019s degrees on NECC\u2019s Lawrence Campus. Eventually, she\u2019d like to earn a master\u2019s degree and teach nursing. \u201cIt feels surreal.
