{"id":28700,"date":"2017-11-16T16:54:25","date_gmt":"2017-11-16T21:54:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/necc.edu\/newsroom2\/2017\/11\/16\/16757\/"},"modified":"2026-05-14T17:15:24","modified_gmt":"2026-05-14T21:15:24","slug":"16757","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/necc.edu\/newsroom\/2017\/11\/16\/16757\/","title":{"rendered":"NECC Partners with Merrimack for Popular Bachelor Completion Programs"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_16758\" style=\"width: 204px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/media-old\/2017\/11\/Eliysha-Heymans.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16758\" class=\"wp-image-16758 size-medium\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/media-old\/2017\/11\/Eliysha-Heymans-194x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"194\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-16758\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Elysha Heymans transferred from NECC right into Merrimack College&#8217;s night bachelor&#8217;s completion program.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Two local colleges, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.necc.mass.edu\/\">Northern Essex Community College<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.merrimack.edu\/index.php\">Merrimack College<\/a>, are partnering to offer non-traditional students an affordable route to a bachelor\u2019s degree.<\/p>\n<p>Students who complete an associate degree at Northern Essex can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.merrimack.edu\/academics\/professional-studies\/degree-programs\/child-family-community-studies.php\">complete their bachelor\u2019s degrees<\/a> in psychology or child, family &amp; community studies (CFC) at Merrimack in 24 months. The Merrimack courses are offered evenings and every other Saturday so students can work while attending college.\u00a0 The tuition includes books and meals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStudents love the special treatment by the Merrimack staff,\u201d says Grace Young, dean of academic and career advising, articulation and transfer.\u00a0 \u201cStudents with busy schedules receive a great education.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After earning her associate degree at Northern Essex, Elysha Heymans of Andover, was eager to enroll in a bachelor degree completion program that was accessible and convenient. She found what she was looking for in Merrimack\u2019s bachelor\u2019s degree completion program.<\/p>\n<p>Merrimack accepts all of the NECC associate degree credits.<\/p>\n<p>Like many of the nearly 400 non-traditional students who have attended these completion programs over the last 5 years, Heymans works days and attends school at night. The programs are designed as six, 15-week semesters to be completed in 24 months. Hybrid courses combine on-campus classes with online learning. The cohort schedule includes three courses during the fall and spring terms, and two courses during the summer terms.<\/p>\n<p>There are other benefits to this evening program as well.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnother benefit is that your advisors take all the stress away by signing you up for your classes and getting your books for you\u2026 it has allowed me to stay stress free and stay focused on my schoolwork,\u201d Heymans said.<\/p>\n<p>Merrimack uses a cohort model in which students begin classes and graduate with the same group of classmates. Classes are held Tuesday and Thursday evenings and every other Saturday. \u00a0This has made Heyman\u2019s experience at Merrimack better than she could have imagined. \u201cYou get the opportunity to bond with your classmates, motivate and support each other, and create a network of professional contacts in your field as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While Heymans is enrolled in the psychology completion program, it\u2019s the CFC program that is most popular.
