That historic meeting is the focus of Northern Essex Community College\u2019s Black History Month Celebration on Tuesday, February 16.<\/p>\n<p>A stimulating lecture and inspirational story of that meeting between self-emancipated slave and abolitionist Frederick Douglass and Ireland\u2019s Catholic emancipator and abolitionist Daniel O\u2019Connell will be presented by educators Don Mullan and William H. \u201cSmitty\u201d Smith, Ed.D, from 2 to 3:30 p.m. in the Technology Center on the Haverhill campus and later at 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the Dimitry Atrium on the Lawrence campus. These events are free and open to the public.<\/p>\n<p>The lecture and media presentation carries the inspirational message of \u201cThe Other Tradition\u201d which is the idea that racism has a parallel, moral counterweight that promotes access, equity, and social justice.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_12837\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/media-old\/2016\/02\/Daniel-OConnell-eng-3000-3x2gty.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12837\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-12837\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/media-old\/2016\/02\/Daniel-OConnell-eng-3000-3x2gty-300x203.jpg\" alt=\"Daniel O'Connell\" width=\"300\" height=\"203\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-12837\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Daniel O&#8217;Connell<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The program includes the screening of the \u201cTwo Men Meet\u201d segment from the public television documentary currently in production titled \u201cAn American Story: Race Amity and The Other Tradition\u201d. It tells of the meeting between Douglass and O\u2019Connell.<\/p>\n<p>Mullan is the founder of \u201cHope Initiatives International\u201d in Dublin, Ireland. He is the author of \u201cEyewitness Bloody Sunday\u201d and co-producer of the film, \u201cBloody Sunday\u201d. He initiated the Frederick Douglass Ireland Project and is a vis\u00aditing professor at Drew University.<\/p>\n<p>Smith is the founding executive director of the National Center for Race Amity at Wheelock College in Boston.
