{"id":28929,"date":"2016-04-05T18:07:28","date_gmt":"2016-04-05T22:07:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/necc.edu\/newsroom2\/2016\/04\/05\/necc-grads-play-role-in-addressing-addiction\/"},"modified":"2026-05-18T15:56:05","modified_gmt":"2026-05-18T19:56:05","slug":"necc-grads-play-role-in-addressing-addiction","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/necc.edu\/newsroom\/2016\/04\/05\/necc-grads-play-role-in-addressing-addiction\/","title":{"rendered":"NECC Grads Play Role in Addressing Addiction"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_13200\" style=\"width: 219px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/media-old\/2016\/04\/Donna-Re-print.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-13200\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13200\" class=\"wp-image-13200 size-medium\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/media-old\/2016\/04\/Donna-Re-print-209x300.jpg\" alt=\"Donna Re print\" width=\"209\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-13200\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Donna Re of Haverhill, a recent graduate of NECC&#8217;s drug and alcohol abuse certificate program, landed her dream job as a program manager at the Veterans Northeast Outreach Center in Haverhill.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Graduates of Northern Essex Community Colleges <a href=\"https:\/\/www.necc.mass.edu\/academics\/courses-programs\/areas\/human-services\/alcohol-drug-abuse\/\">Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counseling Certificat<\/a>e program are on the frontlines of the addiction epidemic, counseling patients during their recovery.\u00a0 And with growing awareness of addiction, the demand for substance abuse counselors is stronger than ever.<\/p>\n<p>Approximately 50 students are enrolled in the college\u2019s 12-month program, and graduates have a 100 percent placement rate, according to Brian MacKenna-Rice, program coordinator.<\/p>\n<p>According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median salary for substance abuse counselors is $39,270 and employment is expected to grow 22 percent between 2014 and 2024 which is much faster growth than average growth.<\/p>\n<p>Students in the program gain clinical experience working under supervision in hospitals, residential programs, shelters, and correctional facilities, and most receive job offers from their clinical sites, says MacKenna-Rice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re not going to get rich in this field but the job has intrinsic value,\u201d says MacKenna- Rice.\u00a0 \u201cMost of our students have been affected by addiction in some way and this field is a calling for them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The great majority of students in the program are adults who are working and raising families while in college and many attend college part time.<\/p>\n<p>Donna Re, who will graduate with an associate degree in Human Services in May, was an LPN and hypnotherapist when she enrolled in the program.\u00a0 A veteran, she used the G.I. Bill to continue her education.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had great success helping addicts in my career and when I moved back to Massachusetts, I realized I would need a degree to continue that work,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>Re\u2019s internship led to a full-time position as program manager at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.northeastveterans.org\/\">Veterans Northeast Outreach Center<\/a>, a position that she calls \u201cher dream job.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Graduates, like Re, are prepared to sit for the state test to become a licensed drug &amp; alcohol abuse counselor.\u00a0 The majority chose to continue their education and earn an associate degree in human services from Northern Essex and many continue on for bachelor\u2019s degrees and master\u2019s degrees in social work.<\/p>\n<p>Anyone interested in the college\u2019s Drug &amp; Alcohol Abuse Counseling Certificate or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.necc.mass.edu\/academics\/courses-programs\/areas\/human-services\/associates-degree\/\">Human Service Associate Degree<\/a> is invited to attend an information session.\u00a0 They will be held June 7 from 10 to noon in the Bentley Library, Room 112, Haverhill Campus, 100 Elliott St. and April 25 from 6 to 8 p.m. on the Lawrence Campus, Room 244, the Dimitry Building, 45 Franklin St.<\/p>\n<p>For more information, visit the website www.necc.mass.edu or contact enrollment services, <a href=\"mailto:admissions@necc.mass.edu\">admissions@necc.mass.edu<\/a> or 978 556-3700.<\/p>\n<p>With campuses in Haverhill and Lawrence, Northern Essex Community College offers over 70 associate degree and certificate programs as well as hundreds of noncredit courses designed for personal enrichment and career growth.\u00a0 More than 6,600 students are enrolled in credit associate degree and certificate programs on the Haverhill and Lawrence campuses; and another 6,700 take noncredit workforce development and community education classes on campus, and at businesses and community sites across the Merrimack Valley.\u00a0 Northern Essex is the only state college located in the lower Merrimack Valley Region of Massachusetts.
