{"id":28957,"date":"2016-04-20T16:16:41","date_gmt":"2016-04-20T20:16:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/necc.edu\/newsroom2\/2016\/04\/20\/former-welder-selected-student-commencement-speaker\/"},"modified":"2026-05-18T15:56:33","modified_gmt":"2026-05-18T19:56:33","slug":"former-welder-selected-student-commencement-speaker","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/necc.edu\/newsroom\/2016\/04\/20\/former-welder-selected-student-commencement-speaker\/","title":{"rendered":"Former Welder Selected Student Commencement Speaker"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Raymond Florent, a resident of Merrimac, who is graduating from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.necc.mass.edu\/\">Northern Essex Community College<\/a> with an associate degree in elementary education, has been selected as the student speaker for the college\u2019s 54th\u00a0Annual Commencement Exercises, which will be held on Saturday, May 21, on the Haverhill campus.<\/p>\n<p>Born and raised in Haverhill, Florent is a 1999 graduate of Haverhill High School. He trained as a welder and was making a respectable living when a workplace injury sidelined him. Unable to return to the physical demands of a welding position, he accepted part-time work at an area amusement park designing sets and dressing as a cast member. He enjoyed the work, but realized it wasn\u2019t a sustainable career.<\/p>\n<p>Using his imagination, Florent saw himself blending his creativity with working with children. The seed for becoming an elementary teacher was planted. In 2013 he enrolled in Northern Essex\u2019s Elementary Education program.<\/p>\n<p>Initially, he saw Northern Essex as a means to an end. He would attend classes, graduate, and transfer into a four-year program. He couldn\u2019t imagine socializing with traditional students, yet they gravitated toward this funny, smart, and charismatic teacher -in-training. Soon, he was elected a student senator; he participated in the student leadership program; became a member of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ptk.org\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Phi Theta Kappa<\/a>, the community college honor society, and <a href=\"https:\/\/psibeta.org\/site\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Psi Beta<\/a>; joined the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.necc.mass.edu\/academics\/support-services\/pace\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pathways to Career and Academic Excellence<\/a> (PACE) Program; joined the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.necc.mass.edu\/student-services\/current\/policies-conduct\/student-code-of-conduct-grievance-procedure\/student-code-of-conduct\/definitions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NECC Judicial Review Board<\/a>, and volunteered for a number of local organizations including <a href=\"https:\/\/emmausinc.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Emmaus House<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lazarushouse.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lazarus House<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.corunummealcenter.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cor Unum<\/a>, the Community Outreach Group (COG), and local veterans\u2019 charities. He is also a work study student in NECC\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.necc.mass.edu\/student-life\/activities\/fitness-center\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sport &amp; Fitness Center<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cComing here I found a passion for education that I never had before,\u201d Florent says. \u201cIt was so welcoming that I couldn\u2019t get enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Last fall, the PACE staff nominated Florent for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.meoaonline.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Massachusetts Educational Opportunity Association Scholarship Award<\/a>. He was one of just five recipients to receive the award.<\/p>\n<p>Florent will graduate in May with a near perfect GPA.
