It\u2019s your voice. Whatever voice that may be,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/diannelyantigua.wordpress.com\/\">Diannely Antigua<\/a>, a former Haverhill resident and alumna of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.necc.mass.edu\/\">Northern Essex Community College<\/a>, \u00a0told the winners of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.necc.mass.edu\/academics\/enrichment\/service-learning\/peace-poetry\/\">NECC 8th Annual Peace Poetry Contest<\/a> and their friends and family when she was the guest speaker Friday, May 6.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhether it\u2019s loud, quiet, funny, sad. It\u2019s a voice worth searching for. I searched for a voice to explain myself,\u201d the New York University (NYU), graduate student told the standing-room-only crowd. \u201cI searched for a voice to explain my body, my color, my hair. My language, how Spanish and English lived peacefully on my same tongue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The poems of four area students, ranging from grade 4 to college level,\u00a0were selected from more than 1,000 entries to win the contest.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_13441\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/media-old\/2016\/05\/064_DSC_9707.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-13441\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13441\" class=\"wp-image-13441 size-medium\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/media-old\/2016\/05\/064_DSC_9707-300x229.jpg\" alt=\"This year's Peace Poetry contest winners included (l to r) Finn Stinson of Amesbury, Alva Yankowitz of Andover, Madeline Lembo of Hampstead, NH, Amanda Toussaint of Methuen; and Judith Delano of Hampstead, NH.\" width=\"300\" height=\"229\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-13441\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">This year&#8217;s Peace Poetry contest winners included (l to r) Finn Stinson of Amesbury, Alva Yankowitz of Andover, Madeline Lembo of Exeter, NH, Amanda Toussaint of Methuen; and Judith Delano of Hampstead, NH.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Antigua, who is now enrolled in NYU\u2019s Master of Fine Arts \u2013 Creative Writing program, shared her personal reflections on the role of poetry and peace in the world. She read a poem she wrote titled, \u201cAnother rice and beans story\u201d about her summers spent at her grandmother\u2019s Lawrence apartment where she would chase the ice cream truck, as well as one of her favorite poems \u201cwon\u2019t you celebrate with me,\u201d by Lucille Clifton, which she says she recites to herself nearly every day.<\/p>\n<p>The authors and their winning poems\u00a0are K-2 \u2013 \u201cThe Dove\u201d <strong>Finn Stinson<\/strong>, Grade 2, Sparhawk School, Amesbury;\u00a0 3-5 \u2013 \u201cThe Everlasting Battle,\u201d <strong>Alva Yanowitz<\/strong>, Grade 5, \u00a0Sanborn Elementary School, Andover; 6-8 \u2013 \u201cHands of Change,\u201d <strong>Madeline Lembo<\/strong>, of Exeter, NH, Grade 7, Hampstead Academy, Hampstead, NH;\u00a0 9-12 \u2013 \u201cOur Disturbance,\u201d <strong>Amanda Toussaint<\/strong>, Grade 12, Methuen High School, Methuen; Adult \u2013 \u201cInner Peace,\u201d <strong>Judith Delano<\/strong>, NECC Alumna, Hampstead, NH.<\/p>\n<p>The contest, organized by NECC English Professor Paul Saint \u2013 Amand, is sponsored by the NECC English department, Division of Foundational Studies and Liberal Arts &amp; Sciences, and the Office of the Vice President of Academic and Student Affairs.<\/p>\n<p>Saint-Amand, a Vietnam-era veteran who is committed to peace, introduced this peace poetry concept more than 30 years ago when he was teaching in upstate New York. When Saint-Amand relocated to Gloucester and began teaching at NECC, he brought the contest with him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeace is a difficult and often evasive virtue, and sometimes it takes a child to get us to see that vision of hope and peace,\u201d wrote Saint-Amand in the foreword of the chapbook featuring nearly 90 entries. \u201cThe poems we received give voice to this vision as expressed in everyday life \u2013 deep feelings about who the poets are in relationship to others and to the world\u2026Consider that to write about peace is always an act of generosity\u2026writing about peace is also a first step to seeing a possible future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Students in grades kindergarten through 12, both from public and private schools in Massachusetts and Southern New Hampshire, as well as adults affiliated with the schools, and NECC students, are invited each year to create and submit original poems in the Peace Poetry Contest. Many of the poems are published in a chapbook.<\/p>\n<p>In closing, Antigua told the winners she believes in poetry and its power.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am a firm believer in the responsibility of art. It is the connective tissue of the world,\u201d she says. \u201cPoetry can be the blood, bringing life to that body. Poetry is big. Poetry can contain multitudes, it doesn\u2019t play favorites. It has room for everyone.
