When Jean Carlos Diaz graduated from Lawrence High School in 2013, he chose to pursue an associate degree in computer science<\/a> close to home at Northern Essex Community College<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Thanks to a partnership announced on Wednesday, September 14, between Northern Essex and Lyndon State College<\/a> of Vermont, students like Diaz can now complete a bachelor\u2019s degree without leaving the city.<\/p>\n

The two colleges formally celebrated the new partnership\u2014the first dual-state collaboration of its kind in Massachusetts\u2014at a launching ceremony held at the Northern Essex El-Hefni Allied Health & Technology Center in Lawrence.<\/p>\n

Speakers included Lyndon State College Interim President Nolan Atkins, NECC President Lane Glenn, Lawrence Mayor Daniel Rivera, and Diaz, who shared a heartfelt video he produced himself titled \u201cWhat this partnership means to me.\u201d<\/p>\n

The first in his family to go to college, Diaz said, \u201cI was worried about going to a four-year college and being far from home.\u00a0 I feel very fortunate to have the opportunity to experience college right where I live.\u201d<\/p>\n

As of this fall, Lyndon State is offering bachelor\u2019s degree programs at NECC\u2019s Lawrence Campus in computer information systems, music business and industry, and visual communications.\u00a0 Classes will be taught afternoons and evening at 420 Common St., or in a hybrid format, which combines online learning with traditional classroom classes.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have a small but mighty first class this fall,\u201d said Dr. Kristin Hunt, Lyndon State College site director at NECC.\u00a0 \u201cI could not be more thrilled with our first group of students.\u201d<\/p>\n

With 1,200 students, Lyndon State College is one of five institutions that comprise the Vermont State College system, according to President Atkins.\u00a0\u00a0 Atkins said that Lyndon State focuses on experienced-based education and students are encouraged to complete an internship, typically during their senior year.<\/p>\n

This is believed to be the first time a Vermont public college has collaborated with a Massachusetts public college to deliver programming in-state.\u00a0 Massachusetts residents taking Lyndon State courses in Lawrence will be charged at the Vermont resident rate.<\/p>\n

Expanding higher education options for Greater Lawrence residents is a priority of President Glenn, which is why he approached Lyndon State about a partnership two and a half years ago.<\/p>\n

According to Glenn, 13* of Lawrence residents have a bachelor\u2019s degree as compared to close to 50* of the population statewide.\u00a0 \u201cIt\u2019s about making all the people in the service area we touch successful,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Mayor Rivera thanked both colleges for their efforts on behalf of his city.\u00a0 \u201cLawrence is one of the few gateway cities of its size that doesn\u2019t have a four-year university,\u201d he said.\u00a0 \u201cLane is making a Herculean effort to fill that gap, and it\u2019s much appreciated by the city.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"tie-switching\"<\/a>

At the start of the program, President Lane Glenn (center), who was wearing a blue and gold tie in Northern Essex\u2019s colors, switched ties with Lyndon State College\u2019s Director of Admissions Vincent Maloney (left) who was wearing a green and yellow tie in his college\u2019s colors. Mayor Rivera helped with the symbolic gesture which showed that this is a \u201cfull partnership\u201d according to Glenn.<\/p><\/div>\n

This partnership comes on the heels of a partnership between Northern Essex and Regis, a leading Catholic University that was announced last November.\u00a0 Since last fall, Regis has been offering bachelor degree completion programs in nursing, public health, and health sciences at Northern Essex\u2019s Lawrence Campus.<\/p>\n
