{"id":29205,"date":"2016-09-23T21:01:10","date_gmt":"2016-09-24T01:01:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/necc.edu\/newsroom2\/2016\/09\/24\/necc-hosts-2016-election-teach-in\/"},"modified":"2026-05-18T16:01:33","modified_gmt":"2026-05-18T20:01:33","slug":"necc-hosts-2016-election-teach-in","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/necc.edu\/newsroom\/2016\/09\/23\/necc-hosts-2016-election-teach-in\/","title":{"rendered":"NECC Hosts 2016 Election Teach-In"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/media-old\/2016\/09\/Election.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-14376 alignright\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/media-old\/2016\/09\/Election-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"Elections 2016 Card with Bokeh Background\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.necc.mass.edu\/\">Northern Essex Community College<\/a> is using this year\u2019s election as a teachable moment, planning a series of events during the month of October designed to educate the college community about the presidential election and other important election issues.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the college\u2019s Election Teach-In, local elected officials will visit the college to discuss the importance of being civically engaged; the public will be invited to a series of events, including \u201cNECC\u2019s Own Big \u2018Presidential\u201d Debate\u2019\u201d, at which faculty members will debate representing all four candidates for president; and faculty will incorporate the election into their course curricula.<\/p>\n<p>On Monday, October 3, Haverhill Mayor James Fiorentini will share why it\u2019s important to get involved in the political process with a presentation titled \u201cWhy Should I Vote.\u201d\u00a0 This presentation will be held from 11 a.m. to noon in the Hartleb Technology Center, Room 103B, Haverhill Campus, 100 Elliott St.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, October 18, the discussion will move to Lawrence when Lawrence Mayor Dan Rivera shares his thoughts on civic engagement from 8 to 9 a.m. in the Dimitry Building, Room L244, 45 Franklin St., Lawrence.<\/p>\n<p>Northern Essex will host its Own \u201cBig Presidential\u201d Debate on Monday, October 24 from noon to 1:30 pm. In the Hartleb Technology Center, Room 103B, on the Haverhill Campus.\u00a0 Professors involved in the debate include Steve Russell, Steve Slaner, Andrew Morse, and Patricia Portanova.\u00a0Katie Formosi of Groveland, a student and current president of the Contemporary Affairs Club will moderate; and Professor Paul Saint-Amand will serve as timekeeper of the debate.<\/p>\n<p>Fifteen faculty have signed up to incorporate the election into their course curricula this year, according to Janel D\u2019Agata Lynch, coordinator of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.necc.mass.edu\/academics\/enrichment\/service-learning\/\">civic engagement and service learning<\/a>.\u00a0 As examples, she shares the psychology class that will research the mental health platforms of the presidential candidates and the communications class that will study the role of the media in a presidential election.<\/p>\n<p>The 2016 Election Teach-In is part of a state-wide effort to educate students on the importance of the election and why their vote matters.\u00a0 It is supported by the Contemporary Affairs Club, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.necc.mass.edu\/academics\/resources\/departments\/department-of-global-studies\/\">Global Studies Department<\/a>, and Civic Engagement and Service-Learning.<\/p>\n<p>To learn more, contact D\u2019Agata-Lynch at <a href=\"mailto:jdagatalynch@necc.mass.edu\">jdagatalynch@necc.mass.edu<\/a> or call 978-738-7530.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s a list of what\u2019s planned:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why Should I Vote?
