{"id":29332,"date":"2016-12-15T19:50:36","date_gmt":"2016-12-16T00:50:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/necc.edu\/newsroom2\/2016\/12\/16\/necc-fills-local-need-for-preschool-teachers\/"},"modified":"2026-05-18T16:04:10","modified_gmt":"2026-05-18T20:04:10","slug":"necc-fills-local-need-for-preschool-teachers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/necc.edu\/newsroom\/2016\/12\/15\/necc-fills-local-need-for-preschool-teachers\/","title":{"rendered":"NECC Fills Local Need for Preschool Teachers"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_14861\" style=\"width: 235px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/media-old\/2016\/12\/ECE.jpg-Print.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14861\" class=\"wp-image-14861 size-medium\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/media-old\/2016\/12\/ECE.jpg-Print-225x300.jpg\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-14861\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pentucket Workshop teachers include NECC ECE grads, left to right, Becky Papageorgiou ( 2001), Amy Marsan (2007), Chelsea Brown (2015), Sarina LeClerc (2017), Laura Yepes- current student teacher (2017), and Jeanne Lenzie (1998).<\/p><\/div>\n<p>When Gail Feigenbaum, coordinator of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.necc.mass.edu\/\">Northern Essex Community College<\/a>\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.necc.mass.edu\/academics\/courses-programs\/areas\/education\/early-childhood\/\">Early Childhood Education Program<\/a>, visits local preschools to observe student teachers, it\u2019s usually old home week.\u00a0 That\u2019s because so many of the preschool teachers in this area are graduates of the college\u2019s program.<\/p>\n<p>Five of the eleven teachers at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pentucketworkshoppreschool.org\/\">Pentucket Workshop<\/a> in Georgetown, for example, are graduates of Northern Essex, including Becky Papageorgiou of Bradford (a 2001 graduate); Amy Marsan of Haverhill (2007); Chelsea Brown of Haverhill (2015), Sarina LeClerc of Haverhill (2017), and Jeanne Lenzie of Haverhill (1998).\u00a0 Laura Yepes of Haverhill, who will graduate in 2017, is currently student teaching there.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s exciting to see familiar faces and I love being reminded of what a positive impact Northern Essex has on pre-school learning in the Merrimack Valley,\u201d says Feigenbaum, who is appreciative of the local preschools who provide practicum learning sites for Northern Essex students.<\/p>\n<p>And preschool directors welcome the pool of new talent that Northern Essex provides.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNECC students bring new perspectives in Early Childhood practices and a youthful energy to our seasoned staff. We love our partnership with the Early Childhood Program at NECC,\u201d says Maryellen Lawler, assistant director of the Pentucket Workshop.<\/p>\n<p>Feigenbaum says that demand for NECC Early Childhood graduates is strong.\u00a0 \u201cThere are definitely jobs out there for our students.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Northern Essex offers associate degrees in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.necc.mass.edu\/academics\/courses-programs\/areas\/education\/early-childhood\/\">Early Childhood Education<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.necc.mass.edu\/academics\/courses-programs\/areas\/education\/elementary\/\">Elementary Education<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.necc.mass.edu\/academics\/courses-programs\/areas\/education\/middle-high-teaching\/\">Liberal Arts: Middle\/High School Teaching<\/a>.
