{"id":29475,"date":"2015-04-27T15:45:27","date_gmt":"2015-04-27T19:45:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/necc.edu\/newsroom2\/2015\/04\/27\/birthday-bags-will-brighten-birthdays-for-pettengill-house-families\/"},"modified":"2026-05-18T16:14:34","modified_gmt":"2026-05-18T20:14:34","slug":"birthday-bags-will-brighten-birthdays-for-pettengill-house-families","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/necc.edu\/newsroom\/2015\/04\/27\/birthday-bags-will-brighten-birthdays-for-pettengill-house-families\/","title":{"rendered":"Birthday Bags Will Brighten Birthdays for Pettengill House Families"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_11118\" style=\"width: 210px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/media-old\/2015\/04\/ECE-student-Sydney-Tatoyian-of-Methuen-newsroom.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11118\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-11118\" alt=\"Photos by Mike Dean www.mikedeanphotos.com\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/media-old\/2015\/04\/ECE-student-Sydney-Tatoyian-of-Methuen-newsroom-200x300.jpg\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-11118\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sydney Tatoyian of Methuen, a member of NECC&#8217;s Early Childhood Education Club, helped prepare birthday bags for the families at the Pettengill House in Salisbury.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Several families at the Pettengill House, a social service nonprofit in Salisbury, will soon have the \u201cfixings\u201d for a good old fashioned birthday party thanks to the student members of the Northern Essex Community College Early Childhood Education (ECE) Club.<\/p>\n<p>The ECE Club collected donations from faculty and students of the Early Childhood Education program as well as from families at the Little Sprouts Child Care Center at NECC.<\/p>\n<p>ECE Club members were able to fill 18 gender neutral \u201cbirthday bags\u201d including one gluten-free, with boxes of cake mix, cans of frosting, thematic paper plates and napkins, birthday candles, and party favors. The items were placed in large, decorative birthday bags topped with colorful tissue paper and will be available to families in need who have a birthday to celebrate.<\/p>\n<p>After brainstorming community service ideas, ECE Club members voted on accepting this project. Collection boxes were decorated and arranged in the ECE classroom and child care center to gather donations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLocal food kitchens and food pantries offer staple food items, but they don\u2019t usually offer birthday items\u201d said Gail Feigenbaum, director of NECC\u2019s ECE program.<\/p>\n<p>Northern Essex Community College offers an associate degree in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.necc.mass.edu\/academics\/courses-programs\/areas\/education\/early-childhood\/\">Early Childhood Education<\/a>.
