{"id":29672,"date":"2015-10-29T17:33:47","date_gmt":"2015-10-29T21:33:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/necc.edu\/newsroom2\/2015\/10\/29\/necc-branch-of-eastern-bank-celebrates-one-year\/"},"modified":"2026-05-18T16:19:39","modified_gmt":"2026-05-18T20:19:39","slug":"necc-branch-of-eastern-bank-celebrates-one-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/necc.edu\/newsroom\/2015\/10\/29\/necc-branch-of-eastern-bank-celebrates-one-year\/","title":{"rendered":"NECC Branch of Eastern Bank Celebrates One Year"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_12285\" style=\"width: 210px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/media-old\/2015\/10\/IMG_3231.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12285\" class=\"wp-image-12285 size-medium\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/media-old\/2015\/10\/IMG_3231-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_3231\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-12285\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">NECC President Lane Glenn, Rachel Concepcion, branch manager, Eastern Bank, and Noemi Custodia-Lora, executive director of NECC&#8217;s Lawrence campus and community relations.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Northern Essex Community College students studying in Lawrence frequently hang out in the Common Street branch of Eastern Bank and Bank Manager Rachel Concepcion could not be happier.<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, Oct. 21, the bank and the college celebrated the one-year anniversary of the opening of the NECC branch of the bank with a luncheon for college faculty and staff.<\/p>\n<p>When the bank opened last year, it was called \u201cthe branch of the future.\u201d\u00a0 The space is small\u2014just 350 square feet\u2014but it is packed with amenities including a contemporary lounge area with comfortable couches and high top tables, laptops and tablets for use for free, free Wi-Fi, and a tech bar where visitors can charge their electronic devices, also for free.\u00a0 Another highlight of the branch is an oversized touch screen which displays tips for financial literacy, covering topics such as buying a house or car, student loans, and how to build your credit score.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to being small and loaded with technology, this branch has more of an educational focus than other bank branches.\u00a0 \u201cWe\u2019re here to inform students,\u201d said Concepcion.\u00a0 \u201cWe want to share the financial practices that will help them be successful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eastern Bank also hires college students as interns and employees, taking the educational mission even further.<\/p>\n<p>Lindsey Sander of Haverhill, an Eastern Bank service associate and student in the Northern Essex accounting program, has been working in the bank 20 hours a week since last January, balancing work in her field with three courses a semester.\u00a0 She\u2019s planning to graduate in December and transfer to Southern New Hampshire University for a Bachelor\u2019s Degree in Accounting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m in love with accounting.\u00a0 There are so many learning and training opportunities here,\u201d says the 2012 graduate of Whittier and former nursing assistant.<\/p>\n<p>Conception says the bank hopes to use this partnership as a model for partnerships with other colleges.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis was the first, and we\u2019ve found we really like getting students involved,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Eastern Bank shares the first floor of 420 Common Street with the Naples-inspired Napolitana Flatbread Pizzeria Bar, and a full-service bookstore operated by Follett.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEastern Bank and our other business partners have created a student center for our Lawrence Campus,\u201d says Lane Glenn, president of Northern Essex.\u00a0 \u201cStudents socialize, study, and grab a bite to eat, and doors are open to the community, too.\u00a0 It really fills a great need in Lawrence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The second and third floors of the building house classrooms, including two computer classrooms equipped with sophisticated equipment, the college\u2019s Center for Instructional Technology, and administrative offices.<\/p>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Northern Essex Community College students studying in Lawrence frequently hang out in the Common Street branch of Eastern Bank and Bank Manager Rachel Concepcion could not be happier.
