{"id":29864,"date":"2014-04-08T15:22:50","date_gmt":"2014-04-08T19:22:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/necc.edu\/newsroom2\/2014\/04\/08\/popular-health-program-returns-to-necc\/"},"modified":"2026-05-18T16:29:32","modified_gmt":"2026-05-18T20:29:32","slug":"popular-health-program-returns-to-necc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/necc.edu\/newsroom\/2014\/04\/08\/popular-health-program-returns-to-necc\/","title":{"rendered":"Popular Health Program Returns to NECC"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/media-old\/2014\/04\/HIT-logo2-copy.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-8355\" alt=\"Health Information Technology Program returns to NECC\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/media-old\/2014\/04\/HIT-logo2-copy.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>After a 12-year hiatus and because of job demand, Northern Essex Community College has reactivated its <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.necc.mass.edu\/ihealth\/programs\/health-information-technology\/\">Health Information Technology<\/a> (HIT) associate degree program through its <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.necc.mass.edu\/ihealth\/index.php\">iHealth<\/a> initiative in Lawrence. This program includes in its curriculum medical coding, medical billing, and electronic medical records.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0Information sessions for the Health Information Technology program and <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.necc.mass.edu\/ihealth\/programs\/electronic-specialist\/\">electronic medical records<\/a> certificate program, both of which will launch this fall, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.necc.mass.edu\/ihealth\/programs\/medical-coding\/\">medical coding<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.necc.mass.edu\/ihealth\/programs\/medical-billing\/\">medical billing<\/a> certificates, which are currently offered, will be held Tuesday, April 8, at 10 a.m., April 22, at 5 p.m., and May 6, at 10 a.m. in the iHealth Building on Franklin Street in Lawrence.<\/p>\n<p>Health information technicians organize and manage health information data by ensuring its quality, accuracy, accessibility, and security in both paper and electronic systems.<\/p>\n<p>NECC\u2019s HIT program will prepare students to be entry-level health information technicians. Students will learn to manage, process, and analyze health data to ensure an accurate and complete medical record. Among other skills, they will learn to apply health information policies and systems that meet with all national and state laws and regulatory guidelines<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. Bureau of Labor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/ooh\/healthcare\/medical-records-and-health-information-technicians.htm#tab-6\">Statistics<\/a> projects that the Health Information Technician field is projected to grow 22 percent from 2012 to 2022, much faster than the average for all occupations.<\/p>\n<p>Jobs can be found in hospitals, medical clinics, physicians\u2019 practices, intermediate care centers, or biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies.<\/p>\n<p>With very few colleges and universities offering a Health Information Technology program,\u201d says Scott Weber, coordinator of the iHealth HIT program, \u201cthere is a real demand for graduates of a Health Information Technology program.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This program, he says, is ideal for anyone who has an interest in both health care and computer technology.
