{"id":30073,"date":"2014-08-26T19:45:40","date_gmt":"2014-08-26T23:45:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/necc.edu\/newsroom2\/2014\/08\/26\/necc-purchases-3d-printer-for-engineering-students\/"},"modified":"2026-05-18T16:34:06","modified_gmt":"2026-05-18T20:34:06","slug":"necc-purchases-3d-printer-for-engineering-students","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/necc.edu\/newsroom\/2014\/08\/26\/necc-purchases-3d-printer-for-engineering-students\/","title":{"rendered":"NECC Purchases 3D Printer for Engineering Students"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_9257\" style=\"width: 235px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/media-old\/2014\/08\/Jim-Cahaly.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9257\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-9257\" alt=\"Professor Jim Cahaly shows off the college\u2019s new 3D printer\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/media-old\/2014\/08\/Jim-Cahaly-225x300.jpg\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-9257\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Professor Jim Cahaly shows off the college\u2019s new 3D printer<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Northern Essex Community College Engineering Professor Jim Cahaly is excited about how the college\u2019s new 3D printer will enhance learning for students in Computer Aided Design (CAD) courses.<br \/>\u201cWe have been working most of this summer on developing student projects to integrate this new technology into our core Engineering curriculum,&#8221; said Cahaly.<\/p>\n<p>One project may be asking students, most of whom are engineering majors, to design their own cell phone or USB case, using Solidworks, a solid modeling design software package which is an industry standard, and then print out the actual design on the 3D printer.<\/p>\n<p>Another project would focus on \u201creverse engineering\u201d where students are given a detailed design of a complex object made up of several components with mistakes, which they are asked to find and correct. When the pieces are printed, it will soon be obvious whether they found the errors.<\/p>\n<p>While 3D printing and related technologies\u2014which builds objects by applying plastic material in successive layers, each layer just slightly thicker than a human hair\u2014 is more than 25 years old, the technology only recently became more affordable. The college\u2019s commercial grade 3D printer was purchased with an $11,000 grant from the college\u2019s Perkins allocation, federal funds administered through the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.\u00a0 Housed on the Haverhill Campus, it will be used by students taking CAD courses, which are offered as part of the college\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.necc.mass.edu\/academics\/courses-programs\/areas\/technology-engineering\/engineering-science\/\">engineering<\/a> curriculum and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.necc.mass.edu\/academics\/courses-programs\/areas\/cis\/applications-certificate\/\"> Computer Aided Design (CAD)<\/a> certificate.<\/p>\n<p>The applications for 3D printing are many, according to Amit Chowdhry of Forbes Magazine, who writes that 3D printing has been used to create car parts, smartphone cases, fashion accessories, medical equipment and artificial organs.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_9259\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/media-old\/2014\/08\/CAD.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9259\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-9259\" alt=\"Using NECC\u2019s new printer, Cahaly recently printed a two-stroke model engine block and heat sink that he modeled on his laptop computer.
