{"id":30816,"date":"2013-12-20T15:18:08","date_gmt":"2013-12-20T20:18:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/necc.edu\/newsroom2\/2013\/12\/20\/necc-students-collect-books-for-lawrence-elementary-school\/"},"modified":"2026-05-18T17:15:21","modified_gmt":"2026-05-18T21:15:21","slug":"necc-students-collect-books-for-lawrence-elementary-school","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/necc.edu\/newsroom\/2013\/12\/20\/necc-students-collect-books-for-lawrence-elementary-school\/","title":{"rendered":"NECC Students Collect Books for Lawrence Elementary School"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/media-old\/2013\/12\/Books-for-Children1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-7689\" alt=\"\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/media-old\/2013\/12\/Books-for-Children1-300x168.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" \/><\/a>Students in Professor Trish Schade and Professor Clare Thompson-Ostrander\u2019s learning community this semester decided to do more than just read about social injustice.<\/p>\n<p>The class was so moved after reading Jonathan Kozol\u2019s \u201cSavage Inequalities: Children in America\u2019s Schools\u201d that they decided to create a class project that would help address the disparities in education which Kozol highlights in his book.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, the group spent a month this fall collecting children\u2019s books for the Tarbox Elementary School in Lawrence. After collecting five full boxes, they delivered the books to the school, which was delighted to receive them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe class came up with the idea for this project and organized it,\u201d said Schade. \u201cI\u2019m very proud of them.\u201d<br \/> Schade and Thompson-Ostrander teach a learning community titled \u201cReading and Writing Toward Home\u201d which incorporates two courses, College Reading and College Writing.
