Fifty years after the murder of her mother and aunts, Minou Tavarez Mirabal, a member of the Congress of the Dominican Republic, will reflect on that tragic event and political violence against women at a Tuesday, March 1 presentation as part of the White Fund Lecture Series presented by Northern Essex Community College. Titled \u201cPolitical Participation in Combating Violence toward Women: A Reflection 50 Years After the Assassination of the Mirabal Sisters\u201d, the presentation is free and open to the public and will begin at 12:30 p.m.at the Lawrence Senior Citizen Center, 155 Haverhill St., Lawrence.<\/p>\n
On Dec. 17, 1999, the United Nations General Assembly designated Nov. 25, as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. The designation is in honor of Mirabel\u2019s mother Minerva and her aunts Patria and Maria Teresa Mirabal, Dominican heroines who were assassinated on that date in 1960 during the dictatorship of Rafael Leonidas Trujillo, one of the bloodiest in Latin America.<\/p>\n
Tavarez Mirabal will discuss gender and political violence against women in the Dominican Republic as well as globally. She will also present what she considers urgent actions to be implemented in order to help end one of the greatest scourges of humanity today.<\/p>\n
The White Fund\u2019s purpose is to have a free series of interactive presentations for Lawrence area adults, youth, and children. The audience is encouraged to seek wisdom, cultural enrichment, and intellectual enhancement by attending and participating.<\/p>\n
Funded by a generous financial gift from the Honorable Daniel Appleton White, the White Fund Lecture Series has provided cultural conversation featuring well-known lecturers in fields such as history, literature, travel, the arts, and politics. The White Fund is collaborating with Northern Essex on this series.<\/p>\n
