Patriot Capt. Timothy Deasy, as well as the role of all Irish-American Civil War veterans, will be the subject of a White Fund lecture presented by the captain\u2019s great-grand-nephew, Lawrence native Robert J. Bateman, on Sunday, March 20, at 2 p.m. in the Lawrence Heritage State Park Visitors\u2019 Center, 1 Jackson St., Lawrence. Free and open to the public, it will be offered in partnership with Northern Essex Community College.<\/p>\n

Bateman, a Lt. Col., 88th<\/sup> Brigade, Deputy Commander, New York Guard \u2013 Army Division, New York, NY, will explore the role of Irish\/American Civil War veterans in the Irish Revolutionary\/Republic (Fenian) Brotherhood and its fight for Irish freedom and independence.<\/p>\n

Captain Timothy Deasy was born in Clonakilty, County Cork, in 1839 and immigrated with his family to the United States settling in Lawrence in 1847. Bateman will discuss the amazing life of Capt. Deasy, who fought for his beliefs on the battlefields of three nations.<\/p>\n

Bateman is a 1963 graduate of Lawrence High School. He received a bachelor\u2019s degree from Villanova University in 1967 and did advanced graduate work in Irish Studies at Harvard University. He has studied at Northeastern University and the U.S. Department of Agriculture Graduate School for Government Executives. He concluded 15 years of service with the United States Department of the Treasury as the Assistant National Director of U.S. Savings Bond Sales in 1982. For the past 28 years he has worked in the financial services industry in the private sector. A grandfather of six grandchildren and father of three children, he resides with his wife in New York City.<\/p>\n

The White Fund\u2019s purpose is to have a free series of interactive presentations for Lawrence area adults, youth, and children. The audience is encouraged to seek wisdom, cultural enrichment, and intellectual enhancement by attending and participating.<\/p>\n

Funded by a generous financial gift from the Honorable Daniel Appleton White, the White Fund Lecture Series has provided cultural conversation featuring well-known lecturers in fields such as history, literature, travel, the arts, and politics. The White Fund is collaborating with Northern Essex on this series.<\/p>\n
