{"id":31057,"date":"2011-07-19T15:32:39","date_gmt":"2011-07-19T19:32:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/necc.edu\/newsroom2\/2011\/07\/19\/math-center-helps-local-man-conquer-math-and-succeed\/"},"modified":"2026-05-18T22:34:30","modified_gmt":"2026-05-19T02:34:30","slug":"math-center-helps-local-man-conquer-math-and-succeed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/necc.edu\/newsroom\/2011\/07\/19\/math-center-helps-local-man-conquer-math-and-succeed\/","title":{"rendered":"Math Center Helps Local Man Conquer Math and Succeed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1234\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/media-old\/2011\/07\/Scott-Hume1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"376\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Many people make life-changing decisions after facing a mid-life crisis but for Scott Hume it was a \u201cquarter-life crisis\u201d that prompted him to give up his full-time job and re-enroll in college.<\/p>\n<p>At the age of 25, Scott realized that, because he didn\u2019t have a college degree, he had no chance of advancement in his current job. \u201cI knew that a degree would make me so much more marketable and I was willing to take a step back to make it happen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Scott had attended college right after graduating from Greater Lowell Technical School in 2001 but he let Basic Algebra II discourage him for continuing. Never a fan of math, he just couldn\u2019t seem to pass that course and, at that time, didn\u2019t have the maturity to see it through.<\/p>\n<p>His biggest fear about coming back, not surprisingly, was passing math, but luckily he met Professor Linda Murphy and with her help and the help of the college\u2019s Math Center\u2014he calls it one of the college\u2019s biggest assets\u2014 he passed Basic Algebra II with an A.<\/p>\n<p>With renewed confidence and the continued support of the Math Center, Scott went on to earn A\u2019s in college algebra, statistics, and calculus. After graduating from Northern Essex with a business transfer degree in the spring of 2010 he transferred to the Isenberg School of Management at UMass Amherst where he is in his second semester and excelling academically.<\/p>\n<p>While at Northern Essex, Scott spent a semester in Orlando, Florida, as a participant in the Disney College Program, an experience that helped define his career path.<\/p>\n<p>Working in merchandising for Disney and attending their courses and workshops, Scott discovered that hospitality was the perfect career fit for him. \u201cI love to travel and I love working with people,\u201d says Scott. \u201cWith hospitality, I can pull it all together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When he graduates from UMass, Scott plans to work in human resources for a large hotel chain.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Many people make life-changing decisions after facing a mid-life crisis but for Scott Hume it was a \u201cquarter-life crisis\u201d that prompted him to give up his full-time job and re-enroll [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":137,"featured_media":31059,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"inline_featured_image":false,"footnotes":"","_links_to":"","_links_to_target":""},"categories":[10],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-31057","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-archive"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v26.2 -
