{"id":31234,"date":"2011-12-20T17:31:59","date_gmt":"2011-12-20T22:31:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/necc.edu\/newsroom2\/2011\/12\/20\/december-trustee-notes\/"},"modified":"2026-05-18T22:38:18","modified_gmt":"2026-05-19T02:38:18","slug":"december-trustee-notes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/necc.edu\/newsroom\/2011\/12\/20\/december-trustee-notes\/","title":{"rendered":"December Trustee Notes"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>iHealth is Off to a Great Start<\/h3>\n<p>Since opening in September, Northern Essex\u2019s newest health initiative\u2014 iHealth@NECC\u2014has attracted 64 students, according to Jackie Long Goding, dean of health professions, who reported on <a title=\"iHealth\" href=\"https:\/\/https:\/\/www.ihealthnecc.com\/\">iHealth<\/a> to trustees at the December 8 meeting.\u00a0 There have been four programs offered to date: phlebotomy, medical billing, health care technician, and general studies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe had an exciting fall semester,\u201d said Long Goding.\u00a0 \u201cIn mid-October, we opened the <a href=\"https:\/\/https:\/\/departments.necc.mass.edu\/newsroom\/2011\/10\/21\/necc-opens-new-ihealth-building\/\">new iHealth building<\/a>, just across the street from the college\u2019s Dimitry Building in Lawrence.\u201d\u00a0 The center features state-of-the-art classrooms and health care labs.<\/p>\n<p>iHealth is designed to complement the college\u2019s already existing health care programs, of which there are 19.\u00a0 Designed for working students with little time to spare, iHealth offers most coursework online and students are only required to be in a classroom one day or evening a week.\u00a0 \u201cIt\u2019s a unique blend of online and face to face.\u201d said Long-Goding.\u00a0 \u201cIt allows our adult learners to keep their lives intact.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Additional iHealth programs will begin in January and in March and Long Goding anticipates having 100 students enrolled by the spring.<\/p>\n<h3>Casino Profits will Benefit Community Colleges<\/h3>\n<p>Trustee Chair Joseph Edwards reported that the Casino Bill signed by Governor Patrick last month should provide some financial benefits for Northern Essex and other community colleges.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCasinos are expected to bring in $260 million and, according to the bill, 17% will go to higher ed,\u201d said Edwards.\u00a0 \u201cWe can expect that some of this will filter down to us.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>NECC Pledges Support for Lawrence School System<\/h3>\n<p>Richard Freeland, Massachusetts commissioner of higher education, has asked Northern Essex to provide names for stakeholder groups being formed in light of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eagletribune.com\/local\/x1331361469\/State-to-take-over-Lawrence-schools\/print\" target=\"_blank\">recent announcement<\/a> that the state would be taking over Lawrence Public Schools.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re ready to help,\u201d said President Glenn.<\/p>\n<p>Trustee Dan Rivera, a Lawrence city councilor, said he would recommend that Northern Essex be well represented.<\/p>\n<p>Any day the state is expected to announce a receiver who will be running the schools.<\/p>\n<h3>Five join the college staff<\/h3>\n<p>Trustees voted unanimously to fund the following new full-time state appointments: Laurie Dimitrov, director of recruitment\/admissions, Courtney Struble, financial aid counselor, and Alicia Bain, staff assistant.\u00a0 Maria Gonzalez, enrollment\/academic counselor\/student success center and Martha Bixby senior special programs coordinator were appointed to non-state appropriated positions.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>iHealth is Off to a Great Start Since opening in September, Northern Essex\u2019s newest health initiative\u2014 iHealth@NECC\u2014has attracted 64 students, according to Jackie Long Goding, dean of health professions, who [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":137,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"inline_featured_image":false,"footnotes":"","_links_to":"","_links_to_target":""},"categories":[10],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-31234","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-archive"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v26.2 -
