{"id":31295,"date":"1970-01-01T00:00:00","date_gmt":"1970-01-01T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/necc.edu\/newsroom2\/1970\/01\/01\/new-murals-adorn-necc-walls-2\/"},"modified":"2026-05-18T22:39:56","modified_gmt":"2026-05-19T02:39:56","slug":"new-murals-adorn-necc-walls-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/necc.edu\/newsroom\/1970\/01\/01\/new-murals-adorn-necc-walls-2\/","title":{"rendered":"New Murals Adorn NECC Walls"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_14334\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/necc.edu\/newsroom2\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2026\/03\/Diversity-newsroom.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14334\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-14334\" src=\"http:\/\/necc.edu\/newsroom2\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2026\/03\/Diversity-newsroom.jpg\" alt=\"a new mural &quot;Diversity&quot; hangs from a wall in the Dimitry Building on the Lawrence Campus. \" width=\"300\" height=\"234\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-14334\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A new mural &#8220;Diversity&#8221; hangs from a wall in the Dimitry Building on the Lawrence Campus.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The subjects featured in the two, new, wall murals hanging in the Dimitry Building on the <a href=\"https:\/\/necc.edu\/\">Northern Essex Community College <\/a>Lawrence campus are a true study in diversity as seen through the eyes of the NECC students who photographed them.<\/p>\n<p>An elderly woman reading in a wingback chair, the spines of a collection of books, a subway rider, an auto mechanic at work, two children on a swing set, a portrait of a baby, a police officer, and a pair of aged hands, are just a few of the subjects featured in the murals \u201cDiversity\u201d and \u201cThe Library\u201d created by Northern Essex students as a <a href=\"https:\/\/necc.edu\/academics\/enrichment\/service-learning\/\">service learning<\/a> project.<\/p>\n<p>Last spring, students in the introductory to digital photography classes taught by NECC professors Bryan \u201cBiff\u201d Ward and Lance Hidy, were tasked with photographing people or objects that represented the themes of diversity and\/ or library patronage.<\/p>\n<p>A total of 229 black and white photos were submitted by 20 students. The photos were selected democratically by votes of the campus community, organized by NECC webmaster Cesar Gonzales Tellez. Former NECC <a href=\"https:\/\/necc.edu\/student-services\/current\/student-success-center\/\">Student\u00a0Success Center<\/a> advisor Joshua Abreu, now a post-grad at UConn, organized the project and Paula Richards, service-learning coordinator provided guidance. It features eight photos and the Jorge Luis Borges quote, \u201cI have always imagined that paradise will be a kind of library.\u201d The printing and installation were funded by a $1,000 NECC Fund grant. On the other side of the building, in another hallway leading to the main classrooms, a 25 x 6 foot the mural \u201cDiversity\u201d offers 59 photographs complimented by a Carlos Fuentes quote, \u201cRecognize yourself in he or she who are not like you or me.\u201d A gift from the NECC Class of 2015 provided essential funding for this mural.<\/p>\n<p>Both murals were printed and installed by Northeast Digital Imaging, a large format printer located in Methuen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese photography students did a lot of really great work,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/necc.edu\/blog\/2015\/04\/15\/jennifer-fielding\/\">Jennifer Fielding<\/a>, Coordinator of Library Services Lawrence Campus Library. \u201cThey had some really creative ideas.
